This previously happened on March 4, 2015, when Erik Cole played his first game with Detroit after having been acquired at the deadline from the Dallas Stars.
The only other players to wear #72 for Detroit were Brad Smith and Andreas Athanasiou. Smith wore #72 during the 1985 playoffs, having debuted wearing #27 several seasons earlier (and wearing five different numbers with the team). Athanasiou was drafted by the Red Wings, not acquired via trade.
