The only time this has happened previously was a 7-3 Detroit win over the Maple Leafs on April 1, 1988. It was the first of eight consecutive games against Toronto, as the Wings and Leafs closed out the regular season with a home-and-home series and then moved immediately into a first round playoff matchup, which Detroit won in six games.
