The Carolina Hurricanes began their rebuilding movement on Friday, trading forward Sami Kapanen to the Philadelphia Flyers for winger Pavel Brendl and defenseman Bruno St. Jacques.

“We’re at a point now where we’re starting to plan for next year and even beyond that, positioning ourselves going into a new system,” said Hurricanes’ general manager Jim Rutherford. “That’s really where we’re headed. That is a tough decision especially because we went to the finals with a team I thought would be very good again this year.”

Kapanen has only six goals and twelve assists with the Hurricanes this season. Rutherford believes Kapanen has struggled this season due to the short offseason that resulted from Carolina’s run to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Brendl has scored five goals and assisted on seven more in forty-two games. St. Jacques is pointless in six games with the Flyers this season.

Philadelphia also recieved minor-league defenseman Ryan Bast in the deal.
