Red Wings Announce Johnson’s Retirement

The Detroit Red Wings announced on Wednesday that forward Greg Johnson has retired as a player.

Johnson was diagnosed with a heart condition during the team’s training camp and had not practiced since, ending a season – and career – that should have saw him rejoin the team with which he broke into the NHL.

Drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft, Johnson made his NHL debut with the Red Wings in 1993. He also played with Pittsburgh and Chicago before moving on to Nashville, where he was the team’s captain.

Johnson will join the Red Wings’ front office in a player development capacity, the team stated.

He becomes the second player this season to retire due to a heart condition. Colorado Avalanche forward Steve Konowalchuk left the game several weeks ago after a similar training camp diagnosis.
