Bruins Sign Potvin: Boston no longer interested in Cujo

The Boston Bruins announced the signing of free agent goaltender Felix “The Cat” Potvin Wednesday, bowing out of the running to pick up Curtis Joseph from the Detroit Red Wings. Potvin was signed to a one-year, $1.3 million deal.

“Felix has been a solid NHL goaltender for a number of years,” Bruins GM Mike O’Connell said. “He’s won playoff rounds, and he gives us another veteran with experience.”

Potvin joins veteran Steve Shields and the young Andrew Raycroft in net for the Bruins. With three capable goalies already in place, it is highly unlikely that Boston would still be interested in trading for Cujo.

Joseph became available when Dominik Hasek ended his one-year retirement in July. The Bruins had announced their interest in him but when Joseph underwent surgery to remove a bone chip from his ankle, trade talks were put on hold.

Atlanta is also interested in Joseph. Washington and the New York Rangers may also want to trade for the goaltender, but deals with either of them would likely require a third team.
