After the Red Wings’ loss to the Florida Panthers on Thursday night, I Tweeted out the following stat:
With last night’s loss, the Red Wings are now 281-265-46 all-time in games played in arenas with Center/Centre in the name.

This led to a brief discussion of whether the Red Wings’ new arena should be an Arena or a Center or a Garden (or an Emporium, for those with more eclectic tastes).
The newest feature to DetroitHockey.Net is the ability to search by arena name in the Searchable Schedule & Score Archive. So I used it to compile the Red Wings’ record by arena name type.
With an extremely small sample size, the Wings’ have fared best in venues with the name “Field,” as they’re 1-0 at Wrigley Field.
With four total games played, Detroit is 3-1 in Halls, namely one season visiting the Tampa Bay Lightning at Expo Hall
Up next is Palace, with the Red Wings 6-2-2 in games played against the San Jose Sharks at Daly City’s Cow Palace and the Lightning when their current arena was known as the Ice Palace.
In 56 games in arenas with “Place” in the name (GM Place, Rexall Place, and Scotiabank Place) – possibly the first result with any kind of statistical reliability – the Red Wings are 32-20-4, for a .607 winning percentage. So Sponsor Place at District Detroit might make some sense.
The Duck-centric “Pond” used by the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim carries with it at 16-10-4 record but isn’t really an option for the Red Wings.
Olympia Stadium and the Red Wings’ 1950s dynasty contributed to Detroit’s 1107-699-316 record in Stadiums, with Chicago Stadium and the 2014 Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium filling out the rest.
Meanwhile the Red Wings’ other homes of Joe Louis Arena and Border Cities Arena are part of a set where they have a combined 1119-796-175.
The last set with a winning record would be the aforementioned Center/Centre at 281-265-46.
Domes (Saddledome, Checkerdome, Thunderdome), Coliseums (including Colisee de Quebec), Garden/Gardens, Forums and Auditoriums are all places where the Red Wings have a sub-.500 record.
Rounding things out, the Red Wings are winless in Corrals (Stampede Corral in Calgary) and Globes (Ericsson Globe in Stockholm).
The full set of numbers are as follows:
Arena Type | W | L | T | Pct |
---|---|---|---|---|
Field | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1.000 |
