Franzen Withdraws From Olympics

Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen withdrew from the Swedish Olympic team on Thursday, citing concussion symptoms.

Franzen missed sixteen games with a concussion suffered against the Tampa Bay Lightning on December 15. He returned for the Red Wings’ shootout loss to the Florida Panthers on Sunday but immediately returned to injured reserve, missing the team’s loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday.

“It’s doubtful we’ll play him before the Olympic break,” Detroit general manager Ken Holland said. “Hopefully he’ll be ready to go after the Olympics.”

Detroit forward Gustav Nyquist is a candidate to replace Franzen on Sweden’s roster.
