Chris Osgood became the tenth goaltender in NHL history to win 400 career games Monday night, leading the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-3 overtime win over the Colorado Avalanche.

Osgood needed to make 46 saves on 49 shots to get the win, a season-high. He was supported by four power play goals.

The victory also came with the Red Wings missing four regulars: forwards Mike Modano, Pavel Datsyuk and Danny Cleary and defenseman Brian Rafalski.

Niklas Kronwall scored the overtime game-winner with 1:18 remaining in the extra period, one-timing a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle past Colorado netminder Peter Budaj off a feed from Henrik Zetterberg.

The Avalanche had opened the game’s scoring just 3:29 in, when Matt Duchene banged home the rebound of a Tomas Fleischmann chance from in front of the net.

Jiri Hudler notched his second goal of the season 2:06 later to tie it up. Thirty seconds into Detroit’s first power play, Hudler snapped a shot from the right faceoff dot past Budaj after his initial attempt was blocked.

TJ Galiardi scored a soft goal from the top of the left circle just 46 seconds later to restore the Colorado lead.

With 7:28 left in the first, Johan Franzen snapped a shot from the inside of the left circle past Budaj to tie the game. The goal came just eight seconds into Detroit’s second power play.

The seconds period was a scoreless affair in which Osgood stopped 23 shots while Budaj needed to make only nine saves.

Nicklas Lidstrom gave the Red Wings a late lead, scoring on the team’s fifth power play of the night with 5:23 remaining in regulation. He beat Budaj with a snap shot from the high slot.

The Avalanche forced overtime with 2:36 remaining, as Duchene put home a rebound chance on Colorado’s seventh power play attempt.

The Avs finished the night one-for-seven with the man advantage, including 1:08 of five-on-three in the first period. Detroit went four-for-six with the extra attacker.

Budaj made 26 saves on 30 shots against.

The Red Wings are back in action when they visit the Dallas Stars on Wednesday night.

Both of Hudler’s goals this season have been scored on Budaj…. Jan Mursak made his NHL debut in place of the injured Cleary… Osgood is now three wins back of his idol, Grant Fuhr.
