Johan Franzen scored with 1:25 remaining in the overtime period Tuesday night, carrying the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-2 win over the visiting Phoenix Coyotes.

The overtime goal came after Valtteri Filppula won a faceoff in the Phoenix zone. Carrying the puck, Franzen cut to the high slot from the top of the right circle and snapped a shot over goalie Ilya Bryzgalov’s shoulder.

Filppula had scored the game’s opening goal just 1:18 into the game. Franzen carried the puck down the right wing boards on a three-on-two with Filppula and Jiri Hudler before passing across to Filppula at the Phoenix blueline. Filppula snapped a quick shot into the top corner of the net to get the Red Wings on the board.

Martin Hanzel tied the game with 3:47 left in the opening period, coming out of the corner in the Red Wings end and pushing to the front of the net to bang his own rebound past Detroit netminder Ty Conklin.

A Brian Rafalski power play goal with 9:23 remaining in regulation put Detroit back out in front but Shane Doan deflected an Ed Jovanovski shot from the point on a Phoenix power play just 1:13 later to even things back up.

The Red Wings finished the game one-for-one on the power play while the Coyotes scored on one of their three tries with the extra attacker.

Conklin made 23 saves on 25 Phoenix shots. Bryzgalov stopped forty of Detroit’s 43 attempts.

Tomas Holmstrom returned to the Detroit lineup after missing 18 games with a sports hernia… Marian Hossa missed his third game with a neck injury.
