Tomas Holmstrom returned to the Detroit lineup Monday night, scoring twice in his first game after missing two and helping the Red Wings earn a 4-3 win over the visiting Washington Capitals.

Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg and Jiri Hudler all scored shootout goals to break the tie after overtime.

Both Detroit netminder Dominik Hasek and Washington goalie Olaf Kolzig made 27 saves on 30 shots before the shootout. Two goals for each team were scored on the power play.

Holmstrom’s first goal of the night opened the game’s scoring just 3:57 in. On a Red Wings power play, Datsyuk passed off to Nicklas Lidstrom as the defender jumped towards the goal. Lidstrom pushed the puck over to Holmstrom who deflected it past Kolzig with his skate from the top of the crease.

Alexander Ovechkin evened the game up with a Washington power play goal at 9:58. Michael Nylander beat Pavel Datsyuk on a draw in the Detroit zone and the puck came straight to Ovechkin for a one-timer past Hasek.

With 26 seconds left in the first, Jeff Shultz gave the Capitals the lead, firing a shot from the blue line that was deflected and fluttered over Hasek before dropping into the net.

Henrik Zetterberg tied things back up on a Red Wings power play with 9:34 left in the middle period. Quick passing moved the puck from Zetterberg to Lidstrom to Datsyuk and back across to Zetterberg for a one-timer past Kolzig from the right faceoff circle.

Holmstrom’s second put Detroit back out in front with just 4:43 remaining in regulation. Datsyuk threw the puck to the front of the net from the right wing and Holmstrom was there to tap it in.

The Capitals pulled even again with only 1:34 remaining, scoring on a power play. Tom Poti sent the puck from the right wing boards out to Alexander Semin in the slot for a one-timer past Hasek.

The goal came on Washington’s seventh power play of the night. The Capitals were awarded the last four power plays of the game. Detroit had four overall.
