The Detroit Red Wings signed All-Star defenseman Niklas Lidstrom to a two-year contract extension Saturday night. The new contract for the three-time Norris Trophy winner is reportedly worth $20 million.

“Nick has been the best defenseman in the game for several years”, said Red Wings general manager Ken Holland. “He’s a big part of our franchise and we are very happy to have him stay in Detroit for another two years.”

The signing comes just a day after the Red Wings inked forward Tomas Holmatrom to a three-year extension.

Lidstrom played 81 games in the 2003-04 season, sitting out only the final game of the year as a healthy scratch. He scored 10 goals and added 28 assists.
