As I griped about on social media yesterday, the roster that the Red Wings publicly announced for their 2025 Development Camp did not include player sweater numbers. They last announced jersey numbers pre-pandemic, which is a frivolous thing that annoys me.
Every year, though, some member of the media gets around to posting the roster that they’re given, which includes those numbers. This year it was The Athletic’s Max Bultman (and thanks to George Malik for the rotated version of that image).
My usual caveat about development camp numbers: Development camp jersey numbers are usually meaningless. Some of these players are far enough out from appearing with the Red Wings that it’s impossible to know if another player will come along and take that number in the meantime. That said, sometimes these numbers stick, and sometimes we can see trends and predict coming changes.
This year the surprising thing is that almost every single returning player came back with a different number than they wore in last year’s Development Camp.
Michael Brandsegg-Nygard is the only player to return with the same number he had last summer uninterrupted, continuing on with #28.
Rudy Guimond is back in #68 but it was worn in Traverse City last year by Gage Alexander.
Landon Miller ‘s #61 isn’t the #31 he wore in dev camp last year but it is what he had for training camp in the fall, when Carter Gylander was wearing #31.
Every other player is in a new number.
In a somewhat-expected move, Brennan Ali goes from #56 to #73. Detroit’s signing of Erik Gustafson last summer made that necessary, with Gustafsson taking #56.
Austin Baker goes from #17 to #75 for no discernible reason. Kevin Bicker goes from #89 to #59. Noah Dower-Nilsson goes from #42 to #57. Charlie Forslund switches from #44 to #65. Dylan James gives up #72 for #67. Maximilian Kilpinen takes Bicker’s old #89, giving up #83. Owen Mehlenbacher drops from #95 to #76. Max Plante moves up from #26 to #84.
Brady Cleveland makes a small move from #62 to #64. Larry Keenan switches from #79 to #86, which allows Jack Phelan to take #79 and give up #87. Fisher Scott goes from #66 to #83. John Whipple moves from #49 to #87.
In goal, Trey Augustine takes the previously mentioned #31 after having worn #60 last summer.
Of note among newcomers, Carter Bear gets the #21 most recently assigned to Joe Snively. Jesse Kiiskinen gets James’ old #72. Michal Svrcek gets the #90 that had been worn by Joe Veleno until last winter’s trade deadline. Will Murphy gets the #26 given up by Plante.
Michal Postava gets Ville Husso’s old #35 and Michal Pradel gets the #32 briefly worn by Jack Campbell.
I was surprised that no one was assigned #36, with Christian Fischer gone and John Gibson not having been acquired by the time numbers would have been doled out. I was also a little surprised to see Forslund get #65 as I wonder if – now armed with an NHL deal – Dominik Shine will take that number with Detroit.
