On the second day of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, the Red Wings made a move to shore up their goaltending for the coming season, acquiring John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks.

Detroit sends goalie Petr Mrazek, a second-round pick in 2027, and a fourth-round pick today to Anaheim to complete the deal.
My initial reaction is uncertainty.
As I said when the Red Wings acquired Mrazek at the trade deadline last spring, I’ve always liked him and I thought he got a bad deal at the end of his first tenure with the team. His numbers in Chicago didn’t reflect his play on a terrible team and he briefly lent some stability to the Detroit crease before the wheels completely came off during this year’s stretch run.
Gibson, meanwhile lost his starting role to Lukas Dostal and has been on the trade block for two straight seasons, with nothing coming of it until now.
That said, when Gibson was healthy, he was a very solid goalie. He’s only 31. A lot of his lack of value is seemingly perceived, not necessarily reflective of his play. A guy who’s been on the block for two years and battling injury is going to be seen as lesser.
That’s not to downplay the injury history. But it’s not like Mrazek had been completely healthy, either. He missed much of the end of the season after being acquired by Detroit, after all.
So I’ve got concerns, but I like the effort here.
