Red Wings Add Veteran Goalie Talbot

The Detroit Red Wings signed veteran goalie Cam Talbot to a a two-year deal on Monday.

The deal carries a cap hit of $2.5 million.

Talbot played 54 games for the Los Angeles Kings last season, going 27-20-6 with a 2.50 GAA and .913 save percentage.

The Red Wings will be Talbot’s eighth team since breaking into the NHL with the New York Rangers in 2013.

This signing is interesting to me because two years and a $2.5 million is not the contract you give to an AHL-bound third-string goalie, which is what the Red Wings were reportedly in the market for.  With Ville Husso supposedly coming back healthy next fall and Alex Lyon on a cheap deal already, this seems to imply something else could be in the works at the goaltender position.

Much more frivolously (and per my tradition), I think he’ll be assigned #39 in Detroit, with Tim Gettinger being assigned a new number.
