Missing half of their regular defensive corps, the Detroit Red Wings fell to the Calgary Flames Friday night in a 1-0 game that saw them lose one more blueliner.

Chris Chelios left the game in the first period after blocking a shot with the back of his leg. He attempted to return for the second period but was unable to take a shift.

With with a shorthanded defense, the Wings allowed only one goal.

The only tally of the game was scored on a broken play with 8:06 left in the first. Alex Tanguay sent the puck out front from behind the net but it deflected off the stick of Pavel Datsyuk before hitting Brett Lebda’s shoulder and bouncing over goaltender Chris Osgood.

Osgood finished the night with 25 saves on 26 shots. Calgary netminder Miikka Kiprusoff stopped all 38 shots he faced.

Should Chelios be unable to play on Saturday in Vancouver, the Red Wings will call up either Garrett Stafford or Jakub Kindl from the Grand Rapids Griffins.
