The Phoenix Coyotes scored twice late in the third period on Thursday night, lifting them to a 4-2 win over the host Detroit Red Wings.
Michael Stone sent a blast from the blue line off the inside of the goalpost to the right of Detroit netminder Jimmy Howard and into the back of the net to break a 2-2 tie with 4:47 remaining in regulation, just seconds after the expiration of a Coyotes' power play.
Derek Morris had gotten the Coyotes on the board just 2:21 into the game with a shot similar to Stone's, a blast from the point off the same goalpost and in behind Howard.
Mikkel Boedker tied things back up at 7:04 of the period, outwaiting a sprawling Howard to lift the rebound of a Morris chance into the top of the net.
Howard finished the night with 34 saves on 37 shots against while Smith had 28 stops on 30 Detroit chances.
