Red Wings Rally for Win over Sharks

The Detroit Red Wings fell down 2-0 early in the first period Tuesday night but scored four unanswered goals to earn a 4-2 win over the San Jose Sharks.

Two goals in a 4:04 span late in the first pulled Detroit back into a tie with the Sharks after Joe Thornton scored twice 3:34 apart earlier in the period to put San Jose up by two. A pair of goals 4:18 apart in the third wrapped up the game's scoring to give the Red Wings the win.

Dan Cleary beat San Jose netminder Evgeni Nabokov from in front of the net off a feed from the side of the goal by Valtteri Filppula to get the Red Wings on the board with 5:08 left in the first.

With 1:02 left in the period, Henrik Zetterberg banged home a rebound chance after Nabokov made an amazing save on Tomas Holmstrom with Detroit on a five-on-three.

Derek Meech put the Red Wings in front at 4:40 of the third period, banking a bad-angle chance off of Nabokov's pad and into the net on an attempted centering pass.

Patrick Eaves added an insurance marker at 8:58, putting in a rebound chance from the side of the net.

Thornton had opened the scoring at 6:11 of the first period, knocking home a rebound that Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard couldn't handle.

At 9:45 Thornton extended the lead, corralling another loose puck and putting it in past Howard.

Howard finished the night with 32 saves on 34 shots while Nabokov made 33 stops on 37 Detroit chances.

The Red Wings scored on two of their six power play chances. San Jose was scoreless on three tries with the extra attacker.

Notes: Niklas Kronwall left the game after the second period with an ankle injury. He is not expected to play in Anaheim on Wednesday.

The Wings kick off the West Coast part of their five-game road trip with a late start in San Jose. FSN Detroit has the game at 10:30.

Tomas Holmstrom will make his return from injury, pushing Brad May out of the lineup. This leaves Johan Franzen as the last injured Red Wings forward and he's scheduled back next week in St. Louis. Given the cap issues the Wings now have (which I admittedly don't entirely understand since Franzen's been off the cap all season and the players the Wings have added don't add up to his cap hit), one or more of the players currently on the roster may not return to Detroit when the trip is over.

On the blue line, Jonathan Ericsson will be a healthy scratch for the first time this season. This puts both Brett Lebda and Derek Meech back in the lineup. One of those two could also be moved soon, as Andreas Lilja began his rehab stint with the Grand Rapids Griffins today and will play for them in Rockford tomorrow night.

Way to control that rebound. Ugh.

Well, this might be an earlier night for me than I thought.

Fantastic setup to get Cleary the goal.

Thank you, Rob Blake. Dumbass.

Wow, that was a hell of a save wasted. Nice.

Wings have picked up the pace a bit this period.

MD, I see you reading, shouldn't you have school or something in the morning? Not that it ever stopped me when I was your age, back in the day.

Solid, solid kill.

Nice graphic, FSN. Olli Jokinen shown wearing #99.

Sssssh, don't blow my cover now!Nah, I took a nap so I could stay up! Who needs education, anyways? <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

A formal education is grossly overrated.

Addendum: Hockey teaches all sorts of real-world skills. Like foreign languages.

Sharks really turned it on at the end there. Hope the Wings can bounce back a bit in the third.

Meech: "I dare you to trade me. Get rid of that Lebda bastard."

If only he would say that! Lebda needs to go!

Kronner not on the bench. Oh Christ.

Eaves: "You're not getting rid of me, either."

It seems like the Wings always take over the game in the 3rd period against the Sharks, or it at least feels that way to me.

Well there's still time to blow it but I'm liking things so far.

f*ck me, "Injury update on Nick Kronwall"

"Slight tweak" to what?

Posted by YzerFan19 on 2/3/2010 at 12:57 AM

Never easy. Goddammit.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 2/3/2010 at 1:02 AM

Thornton, shut the f*ck up and get off our goddamned goalie.

I'm so conflicted.

Detroit won, but that pushes Anaheim back a bit.

Although I am glad the Sharks lost tonight. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

You've gotta let us convince you to get rid of that pesky allegience to Anaheim and then this wouldn't be an issue. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.png" />

Kronwall's injury is his ankle. Babcock doesn't think he'll go tomorrow in Anaheim.

Pesky allegiance? How so? They're the hometown boys. Though sadly, we probably won't make the playoffs this season. Unless miracles happen in Anaheim.

Pesky in the fact that it's not to the Wings. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />
