Red Wings Blanked by Blackhawks Again

For the second consecutive game the Detroit Red Wings were shutout by the Chicago Blackhawks. After suffering a 3-0 defeat on the road on Sunday, the Red Wings returned to Joe Louis Arena to drop an identically-scored rematch Wednesday night.

Antti Niemi stopped 33 shots en route to the shutout after Cristobal Huet backstopped the Blackhawks on Sunday.

Patrick Kane, Patrick Sharp and Jonathan Toews scored for Chicago.

Kane opened the scoring with a power play goal 30 seconds into the third period, snapping a shot from the left faceoff circle past Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard through a screen by Troy Brouwer.

Sharp banged a loose puck off of Detroit's Drew Miller during a goal-mouth scramble to put the Blackhawks up by a pair at 3:47 of the third.

Toews wrapped up the scoring with 1:18 left in the game, beating Howard on a shot from the slot that just trickled through.

Howard finished the night with 28 saves on 31 shots.

Notes: In addition to their numerous injuries, Detroit played without defenseman Brian Rafalski, who missed the game with the flu. Jakub Kindl was called up from the Grand Rapids Griffins to take his spot in the lineup.

The Red Wings may be down yet another player tonight when they host the Chicago Blackhawks.

Brian Rafalski skipped the morning skate with flu-like symptoms and Jakub Kindl has been called up from the Grand Rapids Griffins. should Rafalski be unavailable tonight, that puts Detroit back at missing nine of their eighteen regular skaters.

That's just painful to think about. Speaking of painful, check this out:

Just over half of TSN's hockey readers think that the NHL lockout was the biggest story of the decade. I'm one of them so I'm not surprised. What I simply can't believe is that nearly a third of voters think that Crosby and Ovechkin are bigger stories than missing an entire season of hockey.

I just don't know what to say to that.

Something to get your mind off of the injury- and disease-ridden Red Wings and the ridiculousness of some hockey fans...

The latest update on the H2H campaign is that $1848.19 has been raised. Over at The Triple Deke, they've made a commercial in support of bringing Herm to Hockeytown.

If that doesn't make you feel at least a little better, you may not have a soul.

So what if we are down nine of our regular 18 skaters... we are less than 10 points out of first place and are still hanging onto a playoff berth. With everything that has happened, you can't say its all bad. Could be worse... Nick could have retired...

So far we are looking pretty good.

I would have liked to have seen Towes and Malts go at it.

Ken talking about the struggles of the Columbus Blue Jackets a couple minutes ago... If the 'Hawks win the division are we going to hear anything about them taking advantage of the weak Central?

It would be interesting to see how the current standings would be if we had our full roster.

Can't wait for the 2nd week of Jan...

Problem is the Wings were playing like sh*t even when they had their full roster.

For MD...

Looks like Dr. Fil may be back on Saturday, how do you feel about that?

Posted by SYfanSD on 12/23/2009 at 8:11 PM

I can't speak for MD but I know I'll take any player back we can get. Only problem is that Eaves and Miller and Abdelkader have played well and Babs likes May so he's not going anywhere, what do you do with the players that have been filling in?

Solid first period. One or two breakdowns. Not a ton of offense. I'll take it.

Thanks, Mickey, for reminding us that it was a bullsh*t call to give Chicago that power play.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 12/23/2009 at 8:30 PM

Kindl playing the point on the power play. Holy christ, this team is barely recognizable.

Well. Hrm...

I got nothing.

Wonderful! It's like a Christmas miracle.I haven't seen much because of wrapping presents, but things are not looking good. I just don't want the Wings being shut out again, I don't care if they win or not!__________And it's awesome that people donated to get the one guy to a Wings game! If I had money, I would donate, but I don't. I hope it's a great experience for him!

Well, that doesn't help at all.

Posted by Mathieu_Datsyuk132351 on 12/23/2009 at 9:59 PM

Lottery pick. Do it.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 12/23/2009 at 10:04 PM

Hahaha, if only I could afford that. It'd probably be cheaper just to donate in the first place!

Posted by Mathieu_Datsyuk132351 on 12/23/2009 at 10:12 PM

I meant the Wings, actually. Tank the season and get a top-five draft pick. Pittsburgh Plan.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 12/23/2009 at 10:17 PM

Hahaha, everyone keeps saying they should tank. It's kinda depressing that everyone's given up hope. But at least it's getting closer to when everyone's coming back!

Posted by Mathieu_Datsyuk132351 on 12/23/2009 at 10:23 PM

I haven't given up hope, I'd just don't want to see a 9th place finish. If they're gonna lose, lose bad so they get something for it.
