DETROIT, Michigan -- The Detroit Red Wings winning ways continued Thursday night as they picked up a shootout victory over the San Jose Sharks, giving them three wins in a row and points in five consecutive games.
Henrik Zetterberg scored in regulation and in the shootout to lead the Red Wings to the win. Goaltender Chris Osgood made 33 saves on 34 San Jose shots before stopping both Sharks shootout chances.
After a scoreless first period the Sharks got on the board with 5:19 left in the second. Joe Callahan carried the puck into the Detroit zone on a three-on-two.
Defenseman Jonathan Ericsson fell down, leaving Brett Lebda split between Callahan and Logan Couture. Callahan moved the puck to Couture who fired a shot from the right faceoff circle between Osgood's pads.
Zetterberg evened things up at 5:38 of the third period, poking home the rebound of a shot by Nicklas Lidstrom. San Jose goalie Evgeni Nabokov attempted to cover the puck but Zetterberg streaked in off a line change to get to the crease and knock it from under Nabokov's pad and into the net.
A frantic final minutes couldn't break the tie before the shootout was required.
Pavel Datsyuk and Zetterberg both beat Nabokov with fancy fake-outs. Nabokov stopped Jason Williams on Detroit's second shot while Osgood stopped both Dan Boyle and Ryane Clowe.
Nabokov made 35 saves on 36 Detroit chances before the tiebreaker.
Neither team scored a power play goal on the night. San Jose had three tries with the extra attacker while Detroit had two.
The Red Wings return to action on Saturday when they begin a short road trip in Toronto. The game is the annual Hall of Fame Game, at which longtime Detroit captain Steve Yzerman will be honored along with Brian Leetch and former Red Wings Brett Hull and Luc Robitallie.
The Red Wings have points in their last four games but they'll be tested tonight as they host the San Jose Sharks.
San Jose will be without new captain Rob Blake, out with an arm injury. In contrast the Detroit blueline is healthy again as Brian Rafalski and Jonathan Ericsson return to the lineup.
With Brad May still out, Detroit's forward lines will remain the same as were used in Tuesday's 2-0 win over Boston.
Game time is 7:30 with TV coverage by FSD. I've got a 6:00 soccer game so I expect to catch up to the Wings late.
I'm on duty tonight so I have to settle for the radio broadcast... So far we are at an even SOG and we are scoreless midway through the second period
Clusterf*ck. Odd-man rush for the Sharks and one of the remaining defensemen falls down. Can't make it much easier for them.
Argh. Is it just me or are loads of players scoring their first NHL goals aginst the wings this season?
When was the last time you saw that many minus players on our roster at one time? Early 90's?
Hey Clark... How was your game?
6-4 win. Lots of good possession. Hoping the Wings do the same.
Congrats! Lots of possession is all we can ask for these days...
Heh, IT closet open behind Babcock during the intermission interview.
Intent to blow, bitches! Zetterberg streaks in to knock in a loose puck when it looked like Nabokov had covered.
Overtime. Crazy end to the third, kinda glad just to survive.
I just got back from an awful school play. I much prefer to have been here watching the game!
Nabokov's my favorite active goalie, but I hope the Wings get one past him ![]()
I hate the shootout.
Thanks, Ken, for calling it the "skills competition."
Datsyuk! That's a good start.
And Osgood stops it. Awesome.

Now one more....
And Zetterberg wins it! Wish I could have seen the rest of the game, though.
Great move by Zetterberg to finish off an exciting game.

As he was making it, I thought it was a horrible move. Shows what I know.
And we won the shootout!!!!!! Things are getting better!
As has been said before, things are going to change.

While it didn't look fancy like Datsyuk's, I reckon he still knew exactly what he was doing, and Nabokov was taken by surprise.
The Wings were BRILLIANT!
I was at the game with my son, and we had commented about how although they were outshot (apparently) in the first, they outplayed the Sharks. (The Sharks are simply overwhelmingly HUGE!) Then I overheard the men sitting behind us saying exactly the same thing (so it wasn't just we who are totally devoted)! The Wings really skated with speed and energy pretty much for the whole 60 minutes, and Helm and Eaves were dynamos. Our 3rd and 4th lines seemed to be much, much better than theirs. Zetterberg's goal in the game was set up by unrelenting pressure from Helm and Eaves in the Sharks zone. (When you look at that game, you wonder who will leave when Franzen and Val return.)
