VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Down by two goals just 7:05 into Tuesday's matchup against the Vancouver Canucks, the Detroit Red Wings rallied for a 5-4 win. It was their first win on the road this season.
Vancouver took an early lead, scoring twice on their first four shots before Detroit goalie Chris Osgood was replaced by backup Jimmy Howard.
Howard stopped 20 of the 22 shots he faced for the rest of the game, outdueling Canucks superstar netminder Roberto Luongo en route to his second career win.
Luongo stopped 37 of the 42 chances he faced.
Henrik Sedin scored just 30 seconds into the game and Christian Erhoff added another goal 6:35 later to chase Osgood from the net.
Tomas Holmstrom completed a pretty passing play from Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk to put Detroit on the board with 4:13 left in the first period, tapping home a chance from the edge of the crease.
After a scoreless second period, Niklas Kronwall tied the game 3:51 into the third period, sneaking a shot through a screen by Holmstrom and past Luongo.
The Canucks regained the lead 1:14 later with a power play goal by former Red Wing Mathieu Schneider but Pavel Datsyuk tied the game back up one minute after that.
Datsyuk's second of the night - a power play goal - gave the Wings a 4-3 lead at 9:31 of the period.
With Vancouver on a five-on-three, Sedin knocked in the puck from the back side of the goal to pull the Canucks back into a tie with 7:53 remaining in the third.
The Red Wings rebounded with another power play goal of their own as Jason Williams beat Luongo off a feed from Valtteri Filppula with 5:03 left in regulation.
Howard made several stops to keep the Wings in it in the final minutes as they held on for the win.
Detroit finished the night two-for-three on the power play. Vancouver went two-for-four including the five-on-three goal.
Notes: Brad May fought Tanner Glass midway through the second period... The Canucks lost Ryan Johnson after he crashed heavily into the boards in the second period.
The Wings are still looking for their first road win of the season tonight as they visit the Vancouver Canucks.
The Canucks include Mikael Samuelsson, playing his first game against Detroit since leaving for Vancouver over the summer.
Coach Mike Babcock is planning on shuffling up the Red Wings' lines a bit but who knows if they'll stay that way. Kris Draper is practicing between Ville Leino and Jason Williams while Valtteri Filppula centers Todd Bertuzzi and Dan Cleary.
Darren Helm and Patrick Eaves will be healthy scratches. Justin Abdelkader and Brad May return to the Detroit lineup.
Frikkin' late games kill me but I'm planning on doing a live thread. We'll see how that goes.
Oh I am sooooo excited for this game. Vancouver is my second favorite team this year
No, not just because they have Schneider believe it or not.
I hope the Wings win, but then again looking at the last couple of games who knows how it's going to go?
Woowwwwww. Totally not working for the Wings right now.
I'm surprised they're switching goalies THAT fast, though!
"The Red Wings just facing another hot netminder."
Yeah, Ken, nothing like playing the Wings to make a goalie hot.
I personally don't really like that call. It didn't he intentionally pushed him. I could see how it goes either way, though.
As long as they can prevent the Canucks from scoring again though, I don't really care ![]()
At least we are back in the game... f*ck!!!! I was ready to turn it off after the second goal. God willing, this streak will end in four days...
God willing, this streak will end in four days...
Why wait that long, let's get a frikkin' comeback going here.
Is it taboo if I'm wearing a Shanahan jersey right now?....
I think I might go change.
I say no.
I stopped wearing jerseys this season as they haven't been much luck so far.
Howard with another big stop. I hope it means he's tired of people like me talking bad about him.
Must be, because he's playing very well!
Datsyuk now, too? Holy crap. This is getting weird! ![]()
No way I'm changing my name! Maybe Dr. Fil will score, too and make my name complete! ![]()

From your keyboard to Gog's monitor.
Pardon my ignorance, but what's that? Hahaha.
Back in the days when the Rangers sucked, the guys at Hockeybird's forums referred to Gog as the "Patron saint of mediocre hockey teams."
Way to go, ref at center ice. Sure you didn't want to leave it up to the ref in Calgary to call that one?
