GLENDALE, Arizona -- The Phoenix Coyotes scored with 2:40 left in regulation and again in overtime to rally from down by a goal and defeat the Detroit Red Wings Thursday night.
Petr Prucha scored to tie the game when the Red Wings led 2-1 and Adrian Aucoin got the game-winner.
Prucha's goal came on a goal-mouth scramble that saw Detroit netminder Chris Osgood pushed into the net on the play.
Wings head coach Mike Babcock thought Osgood was interferred with on the play, yelling at the officials, "Do your f---ing job!"
Aucoin scored on a seemingly-soft shot from the right wing that deflected off of Osgood's pad, then off his stick on the way into the net.
Detroit had taken the lead in the game at 7:45 of the second period on a goal by Brett Lebda. Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk broke into the Phoenix zone and drew the defenders to them on the right wing, leaving Lebda wide open when he jumped into the play and fired a shot past Phoenix goalie Ilya Bryzgalov.
The two teams traded power play goals in the first period, with Matthew Lombardi scoring for Phoenix with 3:30 left and Tomas Holmstrom tipping a puck past Bryzgalov with 20 seconds remaining.
Pavel Datsyuk earned assists on both goals in his first game back in the Detroit lineup after missing two with a shoulder injury.
The Red Wings went one-for-four on the power play while the Coyotes were one-for-three.
Osgood made 30 saves on 33 shots against. Bryzgalov stopped 25 of 27 Detroit chances.
The Red Wings continue their season-high five-game road trip on Saturday when they visit the Colorado Avalanche.
Both teams have some jump so far. I, on the other hand, do not.
Wings need to knock it off with the giveaways.
Beautiful deflection by Homer. Thought it was Datsyuk at first. I don't care if it's Brad May, important power play goal to tie the game.
I think fourteen Coyotes just got caught paying too much attention to Pavs and Zata. Datsyuk is the only person in North America who saw Lebda wide open on the other side of the ice. 2-1 Detroit.
These games are close to predictable right now.
Still got a point out of it, need to keep afloat on this road swing. Getting 5 of 10 points is a good road trip in my eyes at this point.
It's hard to see anyone slowing down the penguins, only thing that will is the long season still ahead.
Anyone got the quote Babcock was rumored to say "Wings need to bleed" or "Wings are winning too much" .. I don't know where I heard this but it was rumored before season started he had said something along those lines.
To add another note, why isn't Manny Fernandez rostered. Wings need a backup... he would be perfect.
I'm guessing he wants alot of money?
Yzerfan you have connections, make this signing possible. ![]()
I beg to differ. I think Howard should be given every opportunity to stay the full season and backup and or start. He's been a
highly touted prospect for far too long.
WTF happened? I fell asleep with like 3 left on the clock, only to wake to a victorous coyotes team.
Sounds like we got robbed on the tying goal....?
Anybody else p*ssed when Aucoin started throwing blows at Maltby? Then they turn around and give Malts a roughing minor too. First Yotes PP was BS as well.
Snake-bit!!
Let us not forget that the Penguins/Pengoons barely made the play-offs last year....
Also, the Wings are looking much better for stretches of the game...clicking better on the passes, etc....But they seem to lack focus when focus is MOST needed, like the last 5 minutes of the game....
Patience, OldBroad, patience....
Pavel Datsyuk
