KARLSTAD, Sweden -- The Detroit Red Wings finished off their preseason exhibition schedule with a 6-2 win over the Swedish Elite League's Farjestads BK on Wednesday. It was Detroit's first match in Europe since 1938 and a lead-in to the NHL Premier games on Friday and Saturday.
Farjestad outshot the Red Wings early but Detroit netminder Jimmy Howard kept his team in the game.
Jason Williams opened the game's scoring at 6:47 of the first period. Ville Leino picked off an attempted breakout pass in the neutral zone and tapped it back in to Williams who lifted a shot fron the right faceoff circle into the far corner of the net.
Henrik Zetterberg scored a similar goal with 4:52 remaining in the period and Valtteri Filppula added another from the slot with 1:25 left to put Detroit up by three after the opening frame.
Brian Rafalski scored on a chance from the blue line in the second period while Niklas Kronwall and Todd Bertuzzi added third period goals.
Antti Pihlstrom and Sanny Lindstrom scored for Farjestad.
Four of Detroit's goals came on the power play, with only Williams and Bertuzzi scoring at even strength.
With the preseason wrapped up the Red Wings return to Stockholm where they will face the St. Louis Blues in a neutral site home-and-home series to open the 2009-10 season.
Notes: The Red Wings were involved in the NHL's first foray into Europe, visiting Paris and London alongside the Montreal Canadiens in 1938. The two teams played nine games with the Wings going 3-5-1 in the series.
Hmm, no commentary. And my internet's too slow at the moment to handle it, it's jumping all over the place. Damn.
Yeah, surprised by the lack of commentary. And that Howard is in net.

Williams puts a rocket shot into the top corner. Nice tip-pass from Leino on the neutral zone turnover.
I just saw Abs on the ice, looks like he's on the roster. I was also surprised to see Howard in goal. Maybe Ozzie will play in another period, it is preseason still after all.
I bet if there was commentary, it would be in Swedish anyways, all the stats they have shown were so far.
I think Farjestad is losing their momentum. They came out swinging and had us on our heels for the better half of the first 5-7 minutes.

Arena seems really quiet. Did it start that way? I came in five minutes late 'cause I'm watching from work.
Zing! Add Filly to the goal scorers list. Another PPG for the Wings. What is that, 2 for 2? =D
Two for two that I've seen.
Zata is the interview for Swedish TV, of course.
What happened to Drapes? I saw him on a shift already as well.
Maybe he's there and they're rolling a full lineup. No commentary so I have no idea, but I haven't seen him and these are the lines I've noticed:
Franzen - Datsyuk - Holmstrom
Bert - Zata - Cleary
Leino - Filppula - Williams
Eaves - Abdelkader - Maltby
They were singing something before the game and they had a few chants going in the beginning too.
I'm also at work, but luckily, I'm the IT guy and it's been quiet so far. Gonna run and grab a sandwich real quick during intermission.
Will do. Meech just got put on his ass, FJ got another penalty for it, not sure what for though. Interference, roughing, cross-check, any of the above. Inkvall: 2 Minuter.
Rafalski scores from the blue line already before I could even finish typing this, off a leg kick by the FJ goalie.
That's 3 for 3 on PP. Abs is now in the box for 2 minutes.
Beautiful one time from behind the net, Howard makes another great glove save. I think the shot was just a tad high to begin with.
I think the commentators are talking about the difference in the size of the rinks. They had out the play board and were sectioning it off for comparison to the Euro ring.
Another PP opportunity for the Wings. Per Johnsson for BK is in the box for 2, for roughing Homer. Kronwall scores off the faceoff right from the slot.
That does it, Wings take it 6-2. They line up to shake hands.
That was fun, I started commentating for myself towards the end...lol.
That call should have taken 15 minutes, got back just in time to see them skate off the ice. Glad to see it was a solid game, though. Don't have to live with the shame that Chicago has of losing to a "minor league" team.
I should add, this is why I'm taking Friday afternoon off. I'm not gonna be stuck at work for the first game of the season.
I've been debating whether I'm going to try and watch a feed while I'm here at work, or just watch the recorded game when I get home. I already have it setup, it's just not the same if it is not live.
