Abdelkader Gets His Chance to Impress

The Red Wings appear to be giving Justin Abdelkader every chance to impress them this preseason. The lineup for tonight's matchup with the Buffalo Sabres reveals he will be making his third appearance in as many games for Detroit.

Abdelkader has two goals and three points through the first two preseason games. He started Friday night's game against the New York Rangers on the top line centering Todd Bertuzzi and Dan Cleary before switching placed with Valtteri Filppula to center Jason Williams and Ville Leino.

Tonight he'll be back between Kris Draper and Patrick Eaves, as he was on Wednesday against Philadelphia.

Tonight's expected lines are as follows:

Johan Franzen-Pavel Datsyuk-Tomas Holmstrom
Kris Draper-Justin Abdelkader-Patrick Eaves
Tomas Tatar-Kris Newbury-Francis Pare
John Vigilante-Francis Lemieux-Jeremy Williams

Nicklas Lidstrom-Jakub Kindl
Logan Pyett-Brian Rafalski
Jonathan Ericsson-Brett Lebda

Jimmy Howard will get the start in goal and is expected to play the entire game. Thomas McCollum will be the backup.

Tonight's game is the first of the preseason to be broadcast on Fox Sports Detroit.

I'll be at the game but I'll check into the gameday thread when I can.

Wings severely outchancing the Sabres early. Looks more like a "real" NHL game than the first period last night.

Not surprising but the arena's mostly empty. People next to me didn't show up until 2:00 left in the first, people in front of me missed the whole period.

A couple thoughts since it was such a quiet night...

I'm already tired of watching Tomas Holmstrom get knocked around at the edge of the crease after the play. There was one time where he took two or three shots to the back after a whistle and there was no call. Actually, there were a lot of "extracurriculars" that went un-noted on the scoresheet.

The Wings looked for the perfect shot too many times. It worked on their goal but there were a couple times they waited for a pass when they should have put it on net. Especially in the closing minutes.

Tomas Tatar was the Wings extra attacker with Jimmy Howard pulled at the end of the game. That's some faith shown by Mike Babcock. He looked good for most of the night but it looked like he slacked off a bit defensively at times. He and Justin Abdelkader are two players I exempt from the above note, they both had a couple chances where they got the puck and immediately fired it on net.

That's all I've got right now. I'll be going through my photos and posting anything that turned out tomorrow. I missed pregame so all I've got are in-game shots, we'll see if any were any good.
