Red Wings Open Preseason with Win over Flyers

The Detroit Red Wings opened their preseason with a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers less than 24 hours after closing training camp.

The Wings' possible fourth line of Kris Draper, Justin Abdelkader and Patrick Eaves came through Wednesday night, factoring in on two of the three goals as Detroit rallied after trailing 1-0.

Following a slow first period, James Van Riemsdyk put the Flyers on the board at 3:26 of the second, breaking in all alone to beat Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard after a Tomas Holmstrom turnover.

Draper evened things up 6:10 later, banging the rebound of a Brian Rafalski chance past Philadelphia goalie Ray Emery.

Abdelkader set up the Wings' second goal with 1:52 left in the second period. Abdelkader grabbed a loose puck behind the Flyers net and sent it out to Jamie Tardif for a one-timer past Emery.

Jeremy Williams finished off the game's scoring at 3:35 of the third period, scoring on Philadelphia's Brian Boucher.

Aside from the slow start, the other disappointing stat for the Wings was a power play that went 0-7 on the night, including two four minute man advantages.

Howard stopped six of the seven shots he faced in just over 30 minutes of play. Daniel Larsson made fourteen saves over the remainder of the game.

Notes: In addition to scoring the Wings' second goal, Tardif also fought Ian Laperriere early in the third period.

Apparently it's going to be on radio here. And if not, try here (Local Philly).

"The Monty Show" (whatever that is) is on WXYT's feed. I think they're playing the Tigers game tonight but can't play that over the Internet so we get national radio.

Edit: Philly feed confirms they'll be covering the game.

Sounds like good pressure during a Philly double-minor but no scoring. Tough to know how people are doing with no visual.

Draper ties it up, 1-1. Just at the close of another four-minute power play. Rebound goal off a chance by Jakub Kindl.

Edit: Philly announcers were wrong, goal scored from Raffy and Ritola.

Daniel Larsson comes in for Howard. Expected change with the two planned to split the minutes tonight.

Abdelkader grabs a loose puck, puts it out front and Tardif scores. Wings up 2-1 but they're now 0-7 on the power play.

How much longer is left in the game? I'm not a fan of listening to games on the radio, but I'm curious to see how they are playing!

Nevermind, the radio station thing finally loaded <img src="" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.png" />

End of the second intermission right now.

Agreed about not being a fan of listening on the radio. I'm working at the computer anyway, though, so it's not a big deal.

First fight, Jamie Tardif vs. Ian Laperierre. Sounds like Laperierre got in more hits but Tardif got the takedown.

I hate to whine, but I am definitely not a fan of the radio now.

Another goal for the Wings! I didn't hear who scored it, but that's still cool! 3-1.

Out of mid-air, Jeremy Williams on the rebound off a Jakub Kindl shot from the blue line. 3-1 Detroit.

The Wings get the 3-1 win. Good way to start the preseason.
