Helm Scores in OT to Put Red Wings in Finals

Red Wings' rookie forward Darren Helm scored 3:58 into overtime Wednesday night, lifting Detroit to a 2-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks and putting the Wings into the Stanley Cup Finals for the second consecutive year.

Detroit's 4-1 series win over Chicago means the Red Wings move on to face the Pittsburgh Penguins, who they defeated in a six-game series in last season's Finals.

The game-winning goal came on a scramble in front of Chicago netminder Christobal Huet. Brett Lebda put a shot on net that Huet stopped but Tomas Holmstrom knocked the puck loose from the edge of the crease. Helm was free to bang the puck into the open net for his fourth career playoff goal.

Huet had been stellar all night, finishing the game with 44 saves on 46 Detroit chances, including a sprawling kick save on Johan Franzen in the closing seconds of regulation.

The Red Wings broke a scoreless tie 6:08 into the third period, with Dan Cleary deflecting a shot from Lebda past Huet.

Chicago tied things back up with 7:07 left in regulation on Patrick Kane's first goal of the series. Kane raced into the Detroit end down the right wing boards and lifted a backhander over the shoulder of Wings' netminder Chris Osgood.

Osgood ended up with 30 saves on the night, including several on Colin Fraser, who made his first appearance of the series in place of the injured Martin Havlat.

In addition to missing Havlat, the Blackhawks were without starting goalie Nikolai Khabibulin.

The Red Wings came into the game with a long list of injured players. Pavel Datsyuk, Nicklas Lidstrom, Kris Draper, Tomas Kopecky and Andreas Lilja were joined by Jonathan Ericsson, who had an emergency appendectomy Wednesday morning.

Datsyuk, Lidstrom and Ericsson are expected to be in the lineup for Game One of the Stanley Cup Finals.

MacLeod says that neither Khabibulin nor Havlat will play for Chicago tonight.

i'm fine with Pav and Nick sitting considering there's about an %80 chance we close this out tonight and play again on Saturday obviously it wouldd be better if we had em tonight but the healthier the better for the SCF

Well apparently the radio pregame show is reporting Ericsson is also out. WTF?

Edit: MacLeod (via Kukla) says Ericsson had an emergency appendectomy. Now seriously, WTF?

For those keeping track at home, the Wings are now missing half of their top six defensemen and an entire forward line.

Datsyuk, Lidstrom, Draper, Ericsson, Kopecky, Lilja.

I can't believe Kronner didn't get called for interference on the almost-breakaway. Would have been a good penalty.

Not a bad period but the Wings needed to score.

Awful call. Ugh.

Dumb move by Homer.

Can't believe the Wings haven't scored. The longer the Hawks are in it, the more I worry about some fluke thing.

Finally! Wings on the board!

Gone for the year? Everything I've seen says he'll be back next game.

really i always thought appendectomy recovery took awhile then again these are pro athlete's then bonus if he's back that's awesome

Yeah... but a flare up of appendicitis? I'm sorry, that's not something you just spring back from. If you have appendecitis, it has to be removed and although rare can cause serious medical complications (as in the case of my sister who almost died from it.)

I don't know if he'll be out for the whole playoffs tho. It is out patient as long as everything goes according to plan...but he's going to be weak and feel like absolute sh*t and will be drugged up and have incisions on his abdomen...and for those who play hockey... that would not be comfortable with those pants OR that chest protector. Not to mention all the flexing in that region.

I say he's out for a week or so.

Supposedly it was some barely-invasive surgery. I don't know the details.

HELMER!!!!

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/27/2009 at 10:19 PM

Holy hell, there were so many Wings who were just not going to lose this game.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/27/2009 at 10:20 PM

That was ridiculous and frightening.

BUT I WILL TAKE IT.

Darren Helm, even better! <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.png" /> I <3 him!

f*cking Helm! Stanley Cup finals here we come. Again. Woo!

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 5/27/2009 at 10:22 PM

Again here I see the NHL, trying to promote/help Crosby out. I Bet in the first 2 minutes of overtime, we will see some junk call, or two on the Wings, to lead to another game, leaving Pitts to recover for about a week or so. I have been fine with most of the calls in this game, except the run on Ozzy that was definitly goalie interference. But just wait we will be down a man, probley most of the 1st OT. I hope I'm wrong.

From Detroit News:

Ericsson was diagnosed with acute appendicitis and underwent surgery Wednesday afternoon. He is expected to return for the Wings' next game.

Huh? The game's over. The Wings won.Zetterberg not carrying the Campbell Trophy off, unlike Pittsburgh. Interesting.

great play by Homer and Helm stickin with it that was awesome and he we are again in the Final's it's a beautiful thing

Posted by bigred4478 on 5/27/2009 at 10:39 PM

Mike Babcock and Helm know whats up, they did'nt give the NHL the time to decide this game. F Helm what are you talking about besides Ozzy he was one of the best players on the ice tonight. I was wrong, but wait till play Pitts, depending on the Refs, there will be alot of B.S. int that seriers. The NHL is promoting Crosby like crazy, maybe he deserves it, maybe not. But I think whether Pitts plays well or not, they will get the calls that decide games, again I hope I am wrong.

i guess i have a bit of a different view on NHL officiating i don't think there is malice toward's the Wing's i think that it come's down to momentum killers the league want's close 1 and 2 goal game's for excitment and ratings i feel alot of time's if a team is rolling there will be a ridiculous call to try to allow the other team to get back in it it's almost like the stripe's are wearing pager's like an NFL ref lol but i don't really think Buttman and company are out to get us

Posted by bigred4478 on 5/27/2009 at 10:47 PM

yesss!!!!!

Posted by pattonbordin on 5/27/2009 at 10:52 PM

To clarifly, I have been very disappointed, in the last 10 years or so with the officiating in the playoffs. I don't mind a bad call or so, but look at the Wings penalty minutes during the regular season, compared to the playoffs. And if you watch the games, it just makes you sick how the Refs decide games. And yet when other citys are calling us thugs, and dirty players. You see no outrage by the Detroit press! I'm just tired of game deciding judgements by the Refs, let the players play, and let it be decided on talent. To my knowledge, M. Redmond, and Ken Daniels, have been the only ones to stand up to what I would call B.S. the Refs have called out in the playoffs. As much as I like the writers for some of our local sports news, it would seem the NHL and their Refs, always seem to get a pass.... Just my thoughts..

Posted by Datsukian on 5/27/2009 at 10:57 PM

And whats up with that, I know money, but geez, Mickey Redmond, Ken Daniels, and Murphy, can't call games for us in the Stanley Cup! I understand weekend games and such with NBC, but why can't we have those fella's for the Stanley. I hate how the NHL won't let us have a choice, who calls our games. Let Pitts have there guys, which Pitts fans will watch, and let us have our games, brodcast by the best in the buissiness, which we will watch. Versus, who the heck is VS. they didnt exist till a couple of years ago.

They are though, they have been promoting the heck out of Crosby, i've seen lotz of commercials. They want a return on their money.

Posted by Datsukian on 5/27/2009 at 11:23 PM

For the record, the Red Wings skated with only two As again tonight. Henrik Zetterberg and Chris Chelios. No idea why they didn't give a third A out. Maybe they just knew it wouldn't matter.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/27/2009 at 11:51 PM

How sweet was that? I continue to buy tickets for these games thinking that this might be my last chance to see the Wings (either they could lose or, more likely, ticket prices will escalate beyond my pocketbook next game, next round)....Anyway, the crowd tonight was AWFUL...sat on their hands for nearly all of the first period, and just were dull the rest of the time! Names should be taken and these people should not be allowed to buy tickets again (just kidding, but...).

Helm was outstanding! Did you see him on that penalty kill? That did get the bums to their feet! He surely did deserve that goal.

Chelios was inspired, played well, did no harm. And at one point I said, "Lebda must be the only healthy defenseman--he's out there every other shift!" After the game I heard that he played in excess of 25 minutes.

I can't imagine how far medicine has progressed that Ericsson could be back for the next game. Meanwhile, I hope, hope, hope that we see Lidstrom and Datsyuk.

And yes, I miss Mickey and Ken, too. We are likely to watch the games on CBC. NBC or Versus with the sound OFF.

This playoff has every possible inspiring story line, if you're in to that sort of thing. If this team wins it, they are legend, as far as I am concerned.

Was that aimed at my comment? In that case then of course yeah, f*ck Helm, how dare he score the OT winner that puts the team I follow into the Stanley Cup final, to end a game where he was one of the best players on the ice. What a bastard. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.png" />
