Franzen, Hossa Each Score Twice as Red Wings Defeat Ducks

Johan Franzen and Marian Hossa each scored two goals Thursday night, leading the Detroit Red Wings to a 6-3 win over the Anaheim Ducks and evening their Western Conference Semifinal series at two games apiece.

Mikael Samuelsson and Henrik Zetterberg also scored for the Red Wings.

Franzen's goals both came in the first period.

With 8:11 left in the frame, Franzen took a drop pass from Valtteri Filppula and snapped a shot from the high slot past Anaheim netminder Jonas Hiller, tying the game.

Franzen gave the Wings the lead with 36 seconds left in the first, tipping a Niklas Kronwall shot from the point past Hiller.

Corey Perry scored the Ducks' first two goals, matching Franzen to have the game tied with 8:57 left in the second period.

Perry's first came just 42 seconds into the game, taking a stretch pass from Chris Pronger during a bad change by the Detroit defense and snapping a shot past netminder Chris Osgood.

Perry tied the game on a bit of a broken play, as Ryan Getzlaf gained the zone while fighting of both Jonathan Ericsson and Nicklas Lidstrom, dropping the puck to Perry for a long blast.

Marian Hossa broke the tie and scored the eventual game-winner in a 3:02 span late in the second.

Hossa put a wrister from the right faceoff circle past Hiller with 3:58 left in the period, then beat him with a power play slap shot with 56 seconds left.

Samuelsson found the top corner on Hiller on a rush at 2:46 of the third.

Scott Niedermayer scored a power play goal with 9:57 left in regulation, pulling the Ducks to back within a pair, but Zetterberg's empty-net goal with 2:33 remaining finished off the scoring.

Each team finished the night with a power play goal. The Red Wings had five power play tries while the Ducks had three, though two of those for each team were short.

Osgood made 25 saves on 28 shots against. Hiller stopped 28 of 33 Detroit chances before being pulled after Samuelsson's goal. Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped all six shots that came his way in relief.

The two teams will meet again on Sunday as the series shifts back to Detroit for Game Five.

Notes: The Red Wings were once again without Brian Rafalski and Kris Draper... The Ducks were without James Wisniewski, who was injured while taking a puck to the chest in Game Three.

the politic's game of Randy Carlyle and his merry bunch of goon's is seriously getting old it's just a diversion from their dirty tactic's...we REALLY need to start strong tonight and play strong for the whole game obviously but especially the middle which has been a sore spot for the Wing's we should see a whole different bunch tonight i cannot watch but will be listening on 97.1 GO WINGS!!!

How do you fancy that?

Just thought I'd share before the game <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.png" />

yeah big shocker there eh? lol i really can't stand that guy hated him before and then the Kesler incident was the point that i concluded that if anyone ever took the lumber to his head i.e McSorely,Cris Simon style i would laugh hysterically for months and watch it everyday on UTube

Pronger says that "whiners" say he's dirty. f*ck 'im.

Ostracize me as you wish, but I actually like Chris Pronger (when he isn't playing us). Always have! I have a St.Louis jersey signed by him. Now Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf, Francois Beauchamin... those three I cannot stand!

Posted by drwmike33 on 5/7/2009 at 10:01 PM

He has his uses but he is to be hated. I've got him on one of my fantasy teams 'cause the results are undeniable but I would shed no tears if I lost his services because he was no longer in the league.

Vancouver up 1-0 with five and change left. The first game of the double-header is too close to say it'll end before the start of the Wings game.

'Hawks tie it up. Looks like we might see OT. Still no idea what that means for us.

In the Detroit and Anaheim areas our game will be shown. Sorry to any of you who are elsewhere.

Ridiculous thing, it looks like the Wings actually have some jump. The just got burned on an absolutely awful change.

If it’s not one thing, it’s everything else.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/7/2009 at 10:47 PM

I don't know about you guys, but last I checked, Grand Rapids was in Michigan... I'm stuck watching the stupid ass Hawks game because they're geographically stupid over at Versus.

Bed time.

Anyone else think the words "Darren Helm, with speed" are redundant?

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/7/2009 at 10:51 PM

Andrew Ladd just won it for the Hawks.

I guess i'll stay up a little longer....

Posted by drwmike33 on 5/7/2009 at 10:52 PM

Damn, nothing on the power play. The Wings are moving, though.

Wings keep buzzing. This is not the same game as the previous few.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/7/2009 at 11:04 PM

What now, bitches?! What now?!

Aside from the first minute, this is the period I wanted to see from the Wings.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/7/2009 at 11:15 PM

I get the feeling I'll be talking to myself tonight. I also think that between this game and needing to run some errands in the morning, I'm not going to get into the office on time.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/7/2009 at 11:30 PM

Wow. Zata undressed Beauchemin and draws the call. Nice move shorthanded.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/7/2009 at 11:37 PM

Of course the Ducks even it on a broken play. Wings can't let it hurt their momentum.

Hossa's on the board, Wings back in front!

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/8/2009 at 12:07 AM

YES YES YES Hossa has finally arrived!!!!!!!!!

Big Hoss makes it 4-2 with a PPG!

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/8/2009 at 12:13 AM

The Wings just look like they have it tonight. Like they flipped the switch again. I'm still holding my breath but damn if they don't look good.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/8/2009 at 12:15 AM

beautiful finally we are on it i'm still nervous but much relief from the basketcase i was all day leading up to it

Posted by bigred4478 on 5/8/2009 at 12:16 AM

I've gotta laugh. Over in the "Things Wings need to do to win" thread there was a lot of talk about putting the Flying Circus back together. That happens and who gets to scoring? Mule and Hoss.

Mikey! Three-goal lead!

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/8/2009 at 12:36 AM

In comes Giguere. Get one quick on him, please.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/8/2009 at 12:37 AM

Ducks with the PPG. Holding my breath again.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/8/2009 at 12:50 AM

Kopy! Do not fight right now!

Though I'll trade him for Beauchemin.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/8/2009 at 12:52 AM

Zata with the ENG!

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/8/2009 at 1:07 AM

Ozzie chant in the final minutes. Wings fans in Anaheim making themselves heard.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/8/2009 at 1:09 AM

Series tied!

Aside from the first minute and a couple minutes in the third, the Wings were on all night. That's what we've been looking for.

Just watched the highlights. Yeeeeesssss!!!!!!! That Franzen-Filppula-Hossa line is looking great, and if they can get the Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Creary line firing as well, it's sorted. Did the Wings actually play for the whole 60 minutes this time?

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 5/8/2009 at 6:49 AM

Played about 57 minutes. First minute had a stupidly bad defensive line change, a couple minutes around Niedermayer's goal were bad. Very solid overall.

And I am so tired this morning. I hate these West Coast games.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/8/2009 at 9:24 AM

It was my almost-perfect world and the Wings played an almost-perfect game. I cannot wait for Game 5!

What the NHL may not understand (and Don Cherry certainly does not) is that when the Wings are playing "their game" it's magical. You don't have to be one of the "blood lusters" to enjoy the game. It's the kind of hockey that would bring more people to hockey (and don't ratings rise when the Wings are playing?)....Just my opinion.

i definitly woke up in a much better mood today than i did Wednesday morning what really gotta good laugh out of me was crybaby Carlyle's post game press conference in which he stated numerous way's that the Duck's beat themselves but not once could he bring himself to admit that they got outplayed bottomline....i think Babcock would have been man enough to admit it but then again the classier guy does roam the Detroit bench i am really hyped up for game 5 now to not the nerve's i had leading into game 4

Posted by bigred4478 on 5/8/2009 at 12:36 PM

Happy to see the Wings play such a great game! <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.png" /> It's what they really needed and I'm happy to see they have that kind of pep.
