Red Wings Fall to Blackhawks on Late Penalty Shot

Chicago's Dustin Byfugliuen scored a penalty shot goal with 28 seconds remaining in the third period Saturday, carrying the Blackhawks to a 4-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

Byfugliuen's goal broke a 2-2 tie. Andrew Ladd added an empty-net goal to get the 'Hawks their first victory over Detroit this season.

Chicago had opened the game's scoring on their first shot, with Niklas Hjalmarsson blasting the puck past Ty Conklin's glove just 16 seconds into the game.

The Red Wings evened things up with 9:01 left in the first as Valtteri Filppula scored a power play goal off a no-look feed from Jiri Hudler.

Henrik Zetterberg scored with 1:02 remaining in the second to put Detroit out in front but Chicago tied the game at 8:53 of the third on a blast by Ben Eager.

Conkin finished the game with 22 saves on 25 shots against. Chicago's Cristobal Huet made 21 saves on 23 Detroit shots.

The two teams meet again Sunday in Chicago to close out the season.

Notes: The Red Wings wore their Winter Classic jerseys, giving their home fans the chance to see them live... Detroit was without Marian Hossa and Kris Draper who are both listed as day-to-day. Derek Meech and Chris Chelios filled in as forwards on the fourth line to take the open roster spots.

The 'Hawks choose not to wear the Winter Classic jerseys.

And Conklin gets absolutely burned on the first shot. Jesus, that was awful.

Fil gets the Wings on the board with a PPG. Very nice pass by Hudler to make it happen.

Zetterberg made a handful of kickass plays to make that goal happen, including actually scoring the goal. Very nice.

All Illitch had to do was put a Tiger logo on the retro sweater and it would be closer to the original and much more marketable.

Maybe MLB got a copyright on the original a long time ago, because an obvious marketing opportunity was lost.

The actual D (the one in the DH.N logo) isn't the same as the Tigers' D either. I can't explain it.

Can't explain that goal, either. Defense not playing defense and Conklin not challenging.

Awful call leading to a penalty shot. Looks like this one's over. What a f*cking joke. Good thing this game doesn't mean anything.

I've gotta say, I liked Byfuglin's response to being asked if it should have been a penalty shot. Basically that it could have gone either way, he didn't know, but he'd take it. So used to seeing players who got the benefit of the call come out and say "Oh, yeah, that was the right call, I wish they'd make that call more." He admitted it could have been wrong but he'd take it.

I don't really know what happened to make them lose, but whatever.

I saw the first two period and the Wings goals were very nice <img src="" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.png" />

I fell asleep during the third and woke up hearing about them losing, and frankly I just turned it off. |:
