Franzen Scores Twice to Lead Red Wings to First Win of Season

Johan Franzen scored two third period goals to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-2 win over the Ottawa Senators for their first win of the 2008-09 season.

The Red Wings trailed the Senators 2-1 entering the game's third period. With 8:44 left in the game's final frame, Franzen took advantage of a bad Ottawa line change to break down the left wing all alone. He moved to the left faceoff circle and and snapped a shot past goalie Martin Gerber to the far corner of the net.

Franzen scored again with 1:17 remaining, bouncing a wrister from the right wing off of defenseman Filip Kuba. Gerber got a piece of it before it rolled off the far post and into the net.

The Senators had opened the game's scoring just 6:22 into the game.

With Ottawa on a two-man advanage Alexandre Picard passed off to Kuba and got the puck back at the top of the right faceoff circle for a slapper past Detroit netminder Chris Osgood.

Valtteri Filppula evened things up 4:41 later with a wrister from the left wing on a short three-on-two.

Nick Foligno scored with 1:59 left in the second period to put the Senators back in front, jumping between Filppula and Niklas Kronwall, breaking through to go in alone on Osgood and put it past him.

The Red Wings finished the night scoreless after five power play tries. Ottawa scored once in their five chances with the extra attacker.

Osgood made twenty saves on 22 shots while Gerber stopped 38 of 41 Detroit chances.

The Red Wings will be back in action on Monday when they visit the Carolina Hurricanes.

Notes: Derek Meech and Kyle Quincey were healthy scratches for the second straight game. Quincey was placed on waivers earlier in the day.

I figured I'd open up this thread now since I expect to be working on various projects right up to the 7:00 puck-drop.

The Wings look to rebound from their awful mess of a game on Thursday while the Sens finally get to play a game at home after starting the season last weekend in Sweden against Pittsburgh.

Detroit is going with the same lineup as Thursday as the injuries to Brian Rafalski and Kirk Maltby were minor. I'd almost say that's too bad as Malts was one of the guys I was really disappointed with on Thursday and would have loved to see Justin Abdelkader get called up to give it a shot. Almost, as I don't wish injury on anyone and one game does not a season make.

Ottawa will be without captain Daniel Alfredsson. Dany Heatley will be taking over as interim captain (does that mean they're giving him the C while Alfie is out?) and Jarkko Ruutu is moving up to the top line.

That's all I've got right now.

"Since I've been here we haven't lost one player that we didn't want to lose" - Mike Babcock. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.png" />

I hope they win, because my toe is in pain and it would make me feel immensely better and winning is good!

I'm disappointed Alfredsson won't be in tonight, he's been dear to my heart since he shot the puck at Scott Niedermayer.

edit;;

I liked John Keating's opening to the pregame show. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.png" /> It was creative.

I also keep hearing Kyle Quincey is probably going to be picked up off of waivers, yes!!!!

FSN has some fancy new graphics. Way overusing Bank Gothic but I love that font so I don't mind.

Haha, that's awesome! <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.png" /> How'd that happen?I didn't notice it, but I like how the ticker thing (whatchamacallit) doesn't take up the whole top. Ugh, I hate brain loss moments <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.png" />

Maltby already put a hit on someone in the corner. Better in the first five minutes than all game Thursday.

Sound from Tampa? Watching on CI?

Holy crap, the Wings have had more good chances so far than they did all game Thursday. I'm loving this.

Ugh, Cleary with a trip.

GO DR. FIL! <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.png" />

Now why couldn't he have done that while I was wearing my jersey on Thursday? <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.png" />

Kopecky saying "You wanna use that stick like that I'll break it in half and stick it up your ass."

Big save by Osgood. Way to follow the puck.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 10/11/2008 at 8:14 PM

And with that commercial, I'm putting the game on pause to go sand down the new drywall in my bathroom. Fun stuff.

Good save by Osgood. That was neat <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.png" />

Goal by Ottawa, laaaaame. That was an interesting way to get to the net XD

I'm caught up with live now. A couple thoughts...

Foligno breaking through Fil and Kronner on his goal. Jumps between them, puts one arm around each of them, they go down, he scores. Putting your arms around people isn't holding anymore?

Homer's getting his ass kicked in front of the net with no calls.

J.M.F. Franzen! All tied up!

Posted by YzerFan19 on 10/11/2008 at 9:24 PM

And Johan ties it up! <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.png" />

Amazing. Simply amazing. I can't believe no one really knew he could do all this stuff until last year =/

This game is driving me nuts. I really could have used another week to relax this offseason I think.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 10/11/2008 at 9:32 PM

Franzen again!

Oh the excitement! <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.png" /> How much time is left?

Posted by Mathieu_Datsyuk132351 on 10/11/2008 at 9:35 PM

Franzen again! I'm wearing *his* jersey tomorrow!

Posted by YzerFan19 on 10/11/2008 at 9:35 PM

Awful play by Cleary, we'll see if it hurts us.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 10/11/2008 at 9:37 PM

And they get the win. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.png" /> Awesome. I'm excited and feeling better, as expected <3

Wings hold on for the win. I'm breathing easy now.

Yep, could have used more summer.

Well I didn't watch the game live, as I had hardly any sleep on friday night, so I just watched the highlights. Looks like a missed a pretty good game. but I can't really judge the overall performance as I didn't see enough of it.

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 10/12/2008 at 6:31 AM

Game was more in favor of wings throughout, Franzen has that quick, accurate shot that fools goalies... he shoots what looks like a regular wrist shot but its like 30% quicker than normal. amazing stuff
