I keep coming back to a few things from tonight's triple-overtime loss...
#1 - If the Red Wings had been able to clear the puck in the final minute, this series is over. One of those times you see how one bounce can change a whole season.
#2 - I'm not happy with the two goalie interference calls on Detroit in OT. Roberts can throw his elbow all over, people can be tripped up, but heaven forbid anyone get close to Marc-Andre Fleury.
#3 - There was a play where Pittsburgh fired the puck into the net on a Detroit power play. Maybe in OT, I can't remember. It bounced off the net and was never even blown dead.
I might have more notes than that if I get a chance to watch my DVR'd copy of the game. As it is, I'm on I-94 on my way to Ann Arbor to pick up a car to go home and am kind of in shock.
The series is far from over but I can't say I'm comfortable right now.
Eleven hours until the start of the game and my nerves are shot already. I'm confident. I don't see the Penguins having anything left to throw at the Wings.
I'm with you I think the Penguins last gas was the 5 on 3 they didn't convert on, I hope we are right, more excited than anything right now can't wait to see what the atmosphere is like!
Looks like I'll be doing the goals and in-period stuff then on my own. I'm getting excited about the game already.
We're in the arena (well, I am, fitch is outside drinking). Crazy in here, just buzzing.
You'd think the best hockey league in the world would have the best refs. That penalty call on Datsyuk is horrendous.
Oh my f*cking god! Kronwall with an own goal. What's going on here?
The wings dominated most of that period. What the hell?
Great check by the ref, then Malone takes it in the face.
Better, still not enough. Came close though and playing better defense.
f*cking OT coming up. Oh sh*t. Really nervous now.
OT is going to be so wild!
I want to see a longer series, but at the same time, I can't help but root for the Wings...I'm so CONFLICTED!
All I know is if I were in Clark's spot, I'd be throwing up right now from nerves...
So close there. But penalty for interference. Sooo tense.
f*cking double OT. My heart's beating so fast right now.
Triple f*cking overtime. This is excrutiating. Come on boys, dig in!
But also I haven't given enough credit to Fleury. What a bastard he is. He's been amazing.
sh*t!!!!!!!!!!! f*ck no. This can't be happening. This is horrible. 35 f*cking seconds from the cup. 35 f*cking seconds! I can't f*cking believe this. This is f*cking unbelievable. I'm f*cking knackered. It's nearly 6 AM. f*cking f*ck f*ck. I'm off to bed. sh*t. I still can't f*cking believe it.
Well tonight comes to prove that detroit teams are heartbreakers, Wings lose in triple OT and shortly thereafter, Tigers lose in the bottom of the ninth. I can't take the agonizing defeats, not just being plain beaten. Wings still can win it, LETS GO WINGS.
Thirty-four f*cking seconds.
I can't complain about the Hudler penalty but I can't believe the two goalie interference calls. where were the cheap calls on Pittsburgh.
We're finally getting out of the parking structure right now. Crazy.

Its happened all year, DOMINATE teh other team only to let a goal in with the clock ticking down to the last few seconds. At least it wasn't the deciding game, aka game 7.
My dad is complaining about me complaining about the refs. Catmandu is about ready to fall asleep. I think fitch is wasted.
Actually, now my dad is complaining about how Crosby doesn't play defense. Weird night.

Well luck has been on the Wings side most of the playoffs so far, but not the refs by any means. Two disallowed goals for holmstrom, two shady interference calls in OT, and more that I'm beginning to lose count. The disallowed goals still get to me because they could be some of the worst calls ever made behind that flyers goal vs buffalo that went through the net and counted. I still can't believe that the refs are calling the games the same as reg season, do they realize that they're on national television, no wonder the nation isn't clinging to hockey with this new nhl. Tonight was one of the first times I've seen the refs consult with each other about a call, it was about an icing.
Things that wings can take with them from game 5...
1) Didn't quit, came back from a two goal deficit
2) Dominated 2nd and 3rd period and First OT
3) realize it took 6 periods for the penguins to beat wings
What They'd like to forget
1) The first period, let nerves take over
2) The last minute of the game
3) The fact that teams that have won these Multiple OT games in the finals have gone onto win the cup...
That scares me^^
Lets hope Wings can pull out one of those gutsy performances on the road like they've done in each series of the playoffs.
GO WINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The reffing last night was crap. In every game of the series Detroit has dominated Pittsburgh for a good part of the game, if not all of it... The interference on Zetterberg was a joke. Gill was hooking his stick, and he couldn't get away. He was already rushing toward the net with the puck, and with Gill hooking him he couldn't avoid hitting Fleury. He had nowhere to go except straight through Fleury. If Gill's stick hadn't been keeping him from going behind the net, I'd bet that's what he would have done.
The Hudler penalty was a joke... Extends his stick to try to get the puck from Scuderi. Scuderi lifts his stick and knocks Hudler's stick into his own face and then grabs his face and cries to that ref that Hudler drew blood... Pathetic that the ref actually beleived that a light tap like that could have drawn blood.
And apparently Therrien went to Bettman after the Game 4, bitching about the Pens getting so many more penalties than the Wings... Ever think that maybe it's because they're a much cleaner team Therrien? Didn't think so...
I've been laughing at the guys who've been saying that Bettman is trying to artificially extend the series to generate more revenue for the league, and to put more money in his pocket, but after last night's game, I think they may actually be right...
I think the game as a whole was a good one. Detroit definitely deserved to win it based on pressure alone.
The difference was of course Fleury, he played sensational and there will always be games where great goalie play steals a game. Sure there was a few bad penalty calls but none of them changed the outcome of the game. The wings are defintely the better team and they have one more chance to avoid a game 7.
Sure there was a few bad penalty calls but none of them changed the outcome of the game.
I'd argue that one. There were two crap goalie interference calls on the Wings and no crap calls on the Penguins. Why were the bad calls one-sided? If Detroit had gotten undeserved powerplays of their own, how do we know they wouldn't have scored on one of them?
"What If?" and whatnot.
What a game. Fleury stole the show for the Pens with the saves he was making left and right. Detroit carried the play, but just like always a hot goalie can be a difference maker and win a game.
Detroit is still in the drivers seat, but it can not like the fact they have to go back to Pittsburgh. The Pens have lost only one game in these playoffs, and that was Game 4, where Detroit won by only one goal.
Most teams that lose a OT game like that have big trouble righting the ship. Mix that with the Pens getting their usual boost from playing in front of the home crowd, and IF Fleury can maintain the same level, this could be a very very interesting Game 6
While teams losing a game like that do have trouble coming back, historically Osgood bounces back really well from bad games and that was his worst of the playoffs. Some soft goals, including the tying goal (which doesn't happen if he just holds the damn post).
I should add to my bitching about the goalie interference calls that if Osgood holds that post, Franzen clears the damn zone on the play before it, or the Wings don't come out flat in the first, Detroit is celebrating a Cup right now. Obviously the refs did not lose that game for the Wings, I just don't think they called a good game.

They were onesided because Pittsburgh rarely got to play in front of Osgood. The play was consistantly in the Pens zone because of Wing pressure ![]()
