PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania -- The Pittsburgh Penguins finally got on the board Wednesday night, scoring three times to earn a 3-2 win after being shut out in their first two Stanley Cup Final matchups with the Detroit Red Wings.
With the win, the Penguins avoided going down 3-0 in the series, which now stands at 2-1 with Game Four on Saturday night.
Sidney Crosby led the way for Pittsburgh, scoring the game's first two goals.
With 2:35 left in the first period, the Pittsburgh captain capitalized on a Detroit turnover. Brad Stuart sent a pass into the skates of Henrik Zetterberg in a failed attempt to clear the Detroit zone. Ryan Malone worked the puck back on to Marian Hossa for a shot that deflected off of both of Nicklas Lidstrom's skates to Crosby, who snapped a shot past Chris Osgood.
Just 2:34 into the second period, Crosby banged in the rebound of a power play shot by Hossa and the Penguins had a two-goal lead.
Johan Franzen scored his first goal of the series to get the Red Wings on the board on a Detroit power play. With 5:12 left in the second, Franzen went outside-inside to get around defenseman Rob Scuderi on the left wing and drive to the net. He lifted a near-side shot from in close over the shoulder of goalie Marc-Andre Fleury and into the net.
On a broken play at 7:18 of the third, Adam Hall put the Penguins back up by a pair, banking a shot from behind the net off the back of a scrambling Osgood.
With 6:23 left in the game, Mikael Samuelsson snapped a shot from the right wing past Fleury to pull the Wings back within a goal but they would be unable to tie things up, with Pittsburgh holding on for the win.
Fleury stopped 32 of 34 shots in earning the win while Osgood made 21 saves on 24 Pittsburgh shots.
The Red Wings look to move one game from the Cup while the Penguins are trying to stay alive coming back to Pittsburgh where they're unbeaten in the playoffs.
There don't appear to be any lineup changes coming out of Game Two but it's still early.
Television reminder: Tonight's game will be on NBC, as will the remainder of the series.
Lineup change for Pittsburgh: Darryl Sydor comes in on the blue line. No reports on who's coming out to make room for him yet. He's been a healthy scratch throughout the playoffs.

Also on CBC for those who get it, which I'll be watching because I'd rather hear Don Cherry praise the Wings in the first intermission then listen to the stupid NBC commentators [which I sometimes question if they know they're covering hockey?] that never praise the Wings ![]()
The Pens have started well. Hardly any shots for the Wings.
Great chance by Stuart. Another PP coming up, gotta get going...
Power play looked good except for not scoring. Gotta get going with the extra attacker, can't waste those opportunities.
Penguins looked a lot better at the end of the period there. Wings look a little bit like they're biding their time. Not good, gotta keep the pressure up.
Two goals in the whole series and McGuire claims the Penguins skill guys are back.
Damnit.
Wings have gotta get off their f*cking heels, they're looking nervous out there, making bad passes.
Orpik drives Hudler into the net, knocks it off, no call?
Wings looked a lot better in the second but still not good enough. I think they're turning it around though, we'll see in the third.

That's what I was saying.
That was ridiculous. Would have been a goal if they didn't do that--Penalty shot?
They simply had to score in that period, otherwise it would have been too much. I'm not sure that mentally the Pens could cope if the Wings tied the game.
Pierre McGuire is a sad excuse for a commentator. NBC needs to get this chump off the air as soon as possible. I really wish I could watch Don Cherry on CBC, at least he tells it like it is.
f*ck.
Well, a lot to take away from this one. The Wings got a lot better later in the game so if they can carry that into Saturday, they'll be okay.
I guess this means my Game Five tickets are good.
Most exciting game of the series so far, but would have taken a boring Detroit win any day of the week. Not the end of the world, win game 4 and it's all good. Doesn't make me feel much better though.

My sentiments exactly....but we couldn't assume this team would go away easily.
Is it just me, or are penguins fans stupid....they want a call everytime malkin falls!
Whats the update on chelios?? we need him, lilja is bound to make the big mistake.

Wings fans do the same thing with Datsyuk and Zetterberg, I don't blame them.

Chelios is supposedly fine but Babcock didn't want to change things up while they were winning. We'll see if he's in for Game Four.
