On Make-up Calls
Yesterday I posted a bit to YahooGroup "redwing" and thought I'd expand on the idea here.
So the general consensous is that the disallowed Detroit goal in Game Four was a make-up call for when goalie interference probably should have been called on Tomas Holmstrom on Detroit's third goal in Game One. Here's where it gets messy...
The refs in Game One were Kevin Pollock and Bill McCreary. Neither of them were refs Wednesday night, which means that in order for it to be a make-up call then Kelly Sutherland would have either had to have decided to take it upon himself to make up for another ref's mistake or he was ordered to by someone else.
This, to me, is absolutely unacceptable. I can understand a make-up call if it's made by the same ref, in the same game, within a few minutes of the original call. Not the case here.
The problem is that the NHL always backs the refs. After Game One, no one in the league offices said that there was a problem with Detroit's third goal. Now, after Game Four, Gary Bettman himself says that Sutherland made the right call.
You can't have it both ways. One was right or one was wrong.
It's because the NHL doesn't admit that there are bad calls that makes it so you "have" to have make-up calls. There's this ridiculous need to "fix" what happened.
Instead of calling make-up calls, start calling out officials. Acknowledge that they're not perfect but that they work to be better. When an official makes a mistake, suspend them. Make this information public knowledge so that fans know the league is working to get better.
While this doesn't fix the mistake that happens, it's not all that different from suspending Jamie McLennan for slashing Johan Franzen when there was no chance the Red Wings were going to see McLennan again anyway.
We know the refs aren't perfect but it's ridiculous for the league to say that they are.

I've always had my (half) doubts about Osgood's potential. That baby face kid who had a hard time even getting into the players entrance his first year has got me sold. That third period of game 3, standing straight up and calmly steering the puck about the ice, shows some real confidence.
My brother in Phoenix who runs up to the practice facility when the Wings are in town, wrote me how he couldnt stomach what he was seeing. "Here on one end of the ice was Osgood, standing square, playing the angles and stoidly stopping shots. On the other end was a 6 time Veniza winner, flopping around the ice with his legs in the air and his stick God knows where."
No shot at Hasek but his time is over. Hope Ozzie can keep it going.
mini-rant ... I'm still p*ssed about the lame goalie interference call on Holmstrom and that continuous skick work (Morrow?) on the back of his legs.

Update from the Dallas morning skate, via MacLeod: Both Modano and Morrow will play tonight.
On the Wings side of things, Filppula isn't on the ice but will play tonight.

One thing that makes me smile is how Datsyuk does the holy trinity sign if he's out on the starting line. 
The Wings, I hate to say it, are looking a little slow. Hopefully this turns out like Monday's game, where they kick up the pace. I think it'd be neat to see Cleary get a goal, also.

Likelihood that the Wings actually get the next power play? I say low.
Wings D has been strong so far. Nothing on offense, not that they's had a lot of chances.

I can't f*cking believe they called back Datsyuk's goal. Eriksson was causing more interefence than Holmstrom. Complete bullsh*t. What else should we expect from ref's these days though?

On the last replay turco never had the puck covered it went in, no need to make a big deal versus this is what the nhl wants another game....this is f*cking horrible

That call was possibly the worst call I've ever seen..... Holmstrom has no luck with the officials. We are losing secondary scoring.... FRANZEN HELLLO GET OUT THERE GEEZ. can't keep winning w/out him. He's missed bigtime. I thought wings played a good road game, there was another goal that went in but the ref blew the whistle before play was over, the 3rd period where datsyuk flew into the net, puck went in, 3-3 is what it could've been. I really hope Franzen plays next game, if not I think its goin back to Dallas, If so, we can beat them.
