Sweep Success Red Wings Rout Avalanche to Advance to Conference Finals

The Detroit Red Wings took advantage of an injured and nearly-eliminated Colorado Avalanche Thursday night, scoring eight goals en route to an 8-2 victory to finish off a four-game sweep.

All eight goals were scored by Detroit's Swedish contingent. Johan Franzen had his second hat trick of the series while Henrik Zetterberg and Mikael Samuelsson each scored twice. Tomas Holmstrom also scored.

Franzen's goals gave him eleven in the playoffs and nine in the series, a new four-game series record.

Tyler Arnason and John-Michael Liles scored power play goals for the Avalanche, who were without Peter Forsberg, Ryan Smyth, Wojtek Wolski and Peter Stastny.

Detroit started the scoring at 4:33 of the first period, when a heavy Samuelsson shot from the right wing got through Colorado goalie Jose Theodore and glided into the net.

The Avalanche responded 2:18 later, with Arnason taking a feed from behind the net by Andrew Brunette and banging it past Detroit netminder Chris Osgood.

Holmstrom scored on a two-on-one with Zetterberg with 1:26 left in the period and Franzen scored his first of the game just 47-seconds later, working the give-and-go with Valtteri Filppula on another odd-man rush.

Zetterberg added a power play goal at 2:15 of the second period, scored on a blast from the blue line with Holmstrom screening Peter Budaj, who replaced Theodore to start the second period.

Only 3:30 later, Zetterberg added his second of the night, golfing a blind backhand shot from his own rebound off Budaj and into the top of the net.

Franzen netted his second on a shorthanded two-on-one with Zetterberg, throwing a bad-angle shot into the open side of the net with 8:23 left in the period.

With 2:45 left in the middle frame, Franzen finished the hat trick, tipping a Nicklas Lidstrom shot past Budaj with the Red Wings on a power play.

Samuelsson added his second of the night on a tip-in at 8:02 of the third period and Liles wrapped up the series scoring 2:24 later, beating Osgood on a shot from the blue line through screen by Brunette with Colorado on a two-man advantage.

The Avalanche finished the night with two goals on five power play chances while the Red Wings scored twice on four attempts with the extra attacker.

Osgood made 29 saves on 31 Colorado shots. Theodore stopped 12 of 15 first-period chances and Budaj finished the night with 20 saves on 25 shots.

The Red Wings will play the winner of the San Jose-Dallas series in the Western Conference Finals. Dallas currently leads the series 3-1.

Notes: Chris Chelios sat out of the game with what was described as a lower-body injury. Andreas Lilja took his spot in the lineup.

Injury status for the Avalanche:

Paul Stastny (out)

Peter Forsberg (hopeful)

Ryan Smyth (doubtful)

Wojtek Wolski (out)

It seems as though Jose Theodore still gets the start in tonight's Game Four. Haven't seen anything to indicate otherwise.

The Wings lineup looks like it will remain unchanged.

Obviously, it would be good for the Wings if they can wrap things up tonight but it's far from critical. Finishing things tonight would mean they'd get more rest than whoever they play next but all four Conference Semifinal series' could end in the next game so it wouldn't be by much. More important is to at least win by Game Five, to spare the travel back to Denver for a Game Six.

Even with a 3-0 lead, I'm still nervous. I'll feel better when this series is over.

MacLeod confirms, both Smyth and Forsberg will be out tonight.

As Bill at A2Y puts it, it's a great frigging day for a sweep.

Hmm, it is a good day for a sweep. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.png" />

I hope I'll be back in time, but I'm going to a jam session and might miss some of the first period. ): Not that it really matters. Leave some good notes! <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.png" />

Chelios a late scratch for the Wings. Lilja is in.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/1/2008 at 10:10 PM

Sammy gets one through! Wings on the board!

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/1/2008 at 10:16 PM

Uh-oh Theodore. Just the start we wanted.

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 5/1/2008 at 10:17 PM

Three-or-four really should have had that. And Lilja gets the assist. I'll be damned.

Awful call on Homer.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/1/2008 at 10:19 PM

What the f*ck was that call? Should have been the other way around. And just f*cking typical! f*cking goal on the powerplay.

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 5/1/2008 at 10:22 PM

And of course the Avs take advantage.

Conspiracy theory from A2Y: Ref bias for Colorado 'cause NBC wants Game 5 to happen.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/1/2008 at 10:23 PM

Wings looking sloppy right now. Not good.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/1/2008 at 10:34 PM

The Avs have actually turned up to this game.

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 5/1/2008 at 10:38 PM

Homer! Penalize that, bitches!

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/1/2008 at 10:45 PM

J.M.F. Franzen! Bitchsmacked!

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/1/2008 at 10:46 PM

And the Franzenator strikes again! Take that!

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 5/1/2008 at 10:48 PM

And the Avs take a penalty to end the period. If the Wings can score on the power play to start the period, this game is almost over. The idea of being able to calm down is so nice.

I want this thing wrapped up soon so I can go to bed.

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 5/1/2008 at 11:04 PM

Budaj in for Colorado. That didn't take long.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/1/2008 at 11:06 PM

Zata with the blast! PPG! 4-1!

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/1/2008 at 11:09 PM

Oh yeah Hank. Can I mention the word "sweep" now?

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 5/1/2008 at 11:12 PM

Holy f*ck! Zata with a f*cking incredible goal.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/1/2008 at 11:14 PM

In-f*cking-credible goal! f*cking hell Zetterberg!

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 5/1/2008 at 11:16 PM

Maybe we can get Helmer a goal before this one is out.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/1/2008 at 11:21 PM

Six to f*cking one. This game rocks.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/1/2008 at 11:28 PM

FFFFRAAANNNZZZEENNNNN!!!!!! I think that's a goal a game now.

Shalalala shalalala heyyyy goodbye!

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 5/1/2008 at 11:30 PM

Hat trick, Mule!

IIRC, he just broke another Gordie Howe record, most goals in a playoff series.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/1/2008 at 11:40 PM

Two hat tricks in one series. f*cking hell.

And also - HUMILIATION!

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 5/1/2008 at 11:43 PM

Let's get Zata another one, two hat-tricks in one game.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/1/2008 at 11:47 PM

How about three. That would be like unloading a lorryload of salt into a gaping wound. Then rubbing it in as hard as possible.

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 5/1/2008 at 11:54 PM

Or having your face rubbed into a landfill site.

Okay, I'll stop now, you get the idea. It's way too late/early to actually know what I'm saying.

What a great preview for Fabian Brunnstrom. "Look what you get when you come to Detroit, Fabian. Seven goals, all scored by Swedes. Just sign on the dotted line and you could be a part of it."

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/2/2008 at 12:01 AM

Another power play. Come on, Zata! <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/flagcanada.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":flagcanada:" border="0" alt="flagcanada.gif" />

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/2/2008 at 12:03 AM

Ozzie won't even let them get a consolation. No mercy!

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 5/2/2008 at 12:12 AM

Another Swede with another goal. Routine. No big deal. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/flagcanada.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":flagcanada:" border="0" alt="flagcanada.gif" />

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/2/2008 at 12:14 AM

HUMILIATED! This is just too funny.

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 5/2/2008 at 12:16 AM

Bah. Lame penalty on Drake anyway.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/2/2008 at 12:19 AM

Like that goal's gonna make a fat load of difference.

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 5/2/2008 at 12:19 AM

Gotta be careful here, all the Avs need is to score once every 30 seconds for the rest of the game...

<img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/flagcanada.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":flagcanada:" border="0" alt="flagcanada.gif" />

And that's all she wrote!

Sweep complete, the Wings move on!

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/2/2008 at 12:33 AM

Brilliant. I never expected that at the start of the series.

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 5/2/2008 at 12:35 AM

Classy, classy move by the Avs fans to cheer their team even after the loss. Glad to see it.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/2/2008 at 12:36 AM

GET OUT THE BROOMS! <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.png" /> Finally! I can say it <|3333333

That was an awesome way to end the series, and now I get to make fun of my friend tomorrow(Avs fan ): )

Awesome, awesome, awesome. Johan Franzen...is indescribable. I can't believe how well he's played lately.

But hahaha, 'sweep' also rhymes with 'sleep' which is what I'm off to do now. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/flagcanada.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":flagcanada:" border="0" alt="flagcanada.gif" />

Posted by Mathieu_Datsyuk132351 on 5/2/2008 at 12:38 AM

Talking of sleeping....I don't know how I managed to make it. I was knackered before the start of the game. Goodnight.

A little history...

The Wings last scored 8 goals in a playoff game on April 15, 2000, against the Kings.

http://www.detroitho...d...me=0&type=P

The last time they finished the first round in six games and the second round in a sweep was 1997, a year they went on to win the Cup.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/2/2008 at 12:54 AM

A little more history ...

Franzen's 2 Hats in one series... last done by Kurri in 1985

Last done by a Red Wing... Norm Ulman in 1952
