Red Wings Hold Off Predators to Take Two-Game Lead

The Detroit Red Wings held off a strong push by the Nashville Predators Saturday afternoon, allowing a two-goal comeback before scoring twice more themselves and earning a 4-2 win.

Detroit also benefitted from an early no-goal call against the Predators, when goalie Dominik Hasek was beaten as the goal was knocked off of its moorings in what replays showed could have been and allowed goal.

Shortly afterwards, the Red Wings got on the board.

Dallas Drake drove to the net and backhanded a shot that goalie Dan Ellis knocked aside. Charging through the slot, Darren McCarty got to the puck and banged it back past Ellis just 2:26 into the game.

Nicklas Lidstrom added a power play goal 39 seconds into the second period to put the Red Wings up by a pair, sending a pass from the right point through a screen by Tomas Holmstrom.

Just 1:40 later the Predators got on the board with a bounce off the boards. Martin Erat sent the puck around the boards into the Detroit zone. As Hasek went behind the net to play it, the puck bounced off the glass and back out in front for Alexander Radulov to put into the vacated net.

Only 11 seconds lated, Jordin Tootoo tied the game when a bobbled puck by Jiri Hudler and Andreas Lilja put him in alone on Hasek, beating him through the legs.

Kris Draper put Detroit back in front after a Red Wings time out, putting a shot off defenseman Greg Zanon's skate and into the net at the 5:00 mark.

Midway through the third period, Holmstrom added a goal off the rebound of a Pavel Datsyuk chance, wrapping up the game's scoring.

Hasek made 25 saves on 27 shots, 15 of them coming during Nashville's spirited first-period effort. Ellis made 34 saves on Detroit's 38 shots.

The two teams meet again on Monday when the series shifts to the Sommet Center in Nashville for Game Three.

Notes: Chris Chelios became the NHL leader for career playoff games played, stepping onto the ice for his 248th playoff game... The Predators replaced the injured Scott Nichol with Darcy Hordichuk.

Scott Nichol is out for the Predators with a broken thumb. He'll miss the rest of the series. Nashville will try to get David Legwand back from his foot injury for today's game but if Legwand can't go then former Red Wing Josh Langfeld will get the call-up.

The Red Wings don't expect to have any lineup changes today.

I had another hockey dream last night, this one with the Red Wings leading 3-2 late in the third period. It worked last time, we'll see about this one.

Right on Clark. Go WINGS. A few of the other series are showing signs they could go long. A RED WINGS win today could be HUGE. Go WINGS ..... and Keep it Simple. Lets see some secondary scoring today, Ugly goals too.

Heaven forbid NBC have a pregame show, I've been stuck watching snowboarding 'cause nothing else is on TV. Of course, it's not like I want to hear the talking heads talk for a half-hour more anyway. Lets just get this going.

Who the hell is Jimmy Roberts and why is he making these the most boring-sounding hockey highlights ever?

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/12/2008 at 2:02 PM

NBC just showed last year's playoff logo in their intro. Nice. Tools.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/12/2008 at 2:08 PM

Is it ever going to start?

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 4/12/2008 at 2:18 PM

Neither Legwand nor Langfeld is in, not sure who is.

Hahaha, it is now 2:20 (on my computer's clock, which is slow compared to my other clocks) And the face-off just happened. Interesting. Seems like the injury bug has bitten the Preds? <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":o" border="0" alt="ohmy.png" />

Finally!

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 4/12/2008 at 2:21 PM

On the couch next to me, catmandu is complaining about how the NBC guys don't call the game, they just talk about the players.

Dom got lucky that the net was knocked off.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/12/2008 at 2:22 PM

Erat / Radulov / Bonk remain dangerous.

Posted by skyguy52 on 4/12/2008 at 2:23 PM

Yes! McCarty! woo!

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 4/12/2008 at 2:24 PM

Huge turnaroud, Nashville should have had that first goal and the Wings come the other way and score. Way to go Mac!

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/12/2008 at 2:25 PM

And McCarty is back <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/ohmy.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":o" border="0" alt="ohmy.png" /> Yay!

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/12/2008 at 2:33 PM

WOW, the DOM standing TALL!!!

Posted by skyguy52 on 4/12/2008 at 2:33 PM

From the couch, catmandu says of Hasek: He let his one sh*tty goal in, it just didn't count.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/12/2008 at 2:38 PM

Bloody hell Hasek! he's definately Dominating.

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 4/12/2008 at 2:39 PM

Awful first power play. Ugh.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/12/2008 at 2:42 PM

The NBC guys keep talking about how great the Predators are playing. Who's in the lead?!

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/12/2008 at 2:49 PM

Tootoo hits Chelios late and Chelios goes to the room. Why was there no call?

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/12/2008 at 2:51 PM

How did Filppula not convert that?

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 4/12/2008 at 2:52 PM

Bullsh*t penalty.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/12/2008 at 2:55 PM

Saved by a stupid penalty by Nashville. Schoolboy error.

Ok, ok, ok. Who else just saw that Zetterberg commercial? I am happy they are finally favouring him, but was I delusional or did they put clips of the Senators in there?

I swear I saw Ottawa in there. XD Maybe I I should put my glasses on. ._.

I haven't had the pleasure of seeing that one, I saw the Ovechkin one though. Care to tell what it was about?

It's not so much the content, but someone was misreading their crystal ball when they decided to use a Canucks player to promote the playoffs. I'm not sure if it'll get shown again. It was basically the same cliche-ridden script as the others. (I know there should be an accent, but I can't be bothered).

So I should have been watching during the intermission? Damn. It's an afternoon game, I left the front of the TV 'cause I had stuff to do. Stupid afternoon games.

First thing back from the intermission... "What information do you have about the non-goal?"

How come no worries about the uncalled charge on Tootoo?

And power play goal!

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/12/2008 at 3:18 PM

Yes! 2 nil. O yeah. They can kill the game now.

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 4/12/2008 at 3:19 PM

When they replayed it, it remind me of billiards. Hm.

Posted by Mathieu_Datsyuk132351 on 4/12/2008 at 3:30 PM

Things have calmed down now. Which hopefully is a good thing.

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 4/12/2008 at 3:36 PM

I'll be damned, a roughing call against Nashville. Didn't think those happened.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/12/2008 at 3:51 PM
