Red Wings' Rally Clinches Presidents' Trophy

The Detroit Red Wings scored twice in the final 3:27 Thursday night, rebounding from down 2-1 to earn a 3-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The win clinched their fourth Presidents' Trophy in the past six seasons and sixth overall. No other team has won the award more than twice.

Johan Franzen tied the game on a Red Wings' power play with 3:27 left in the third, putting home the rebound of a Nicklas Lidstrom shot from the blue line.

With 12 seconds left, Henrik Zetterberg gave the Red Wings their lone lead. Columbus netmnder Pascal Leclaire tried to play the puck on a dump in but it slipped past him as Zetterberg raced in. Zetterberg got to the puck behind the net before Leclaire could get back between the pipes, and the Swede's backhand shot banked off of the goalie and into the net.

The Blue Jackets had scored first when Ron Hainsey scored on the power play at 7:13 of the second. After a fight for the puck on the right wing, Hainsey was left wide open acorss the ice for a blast past Dominik Hasek's glove.

Mark Hartigan evened things up 2:30 later, banging the rebound of a Niklas Kronwall shot past Leclaire.

Aaron Rome put Columbus back out in front before the Detroit comeback, scoring at 4:05 of the third on a blast from the blue line that slipped through Hasek.

Hasek made 20 saves on 22 shots on the night, with Leclaire stopping 36 of 39 attempts.

Notes: Justin Abdelkader made his Red Wings debut, in for the injured Kirk Maltby... Tomas Kopecky left the game early in the third period with a knee injury.

YES!YES!YES! <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/toothless.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hockeysmiley:" border="0" alt="toothless.gif" /> At least when the injury bug hit, it got someone good this time <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/ohmy.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":o" border="0" alt="ohmy.png" /> Remember how awesome the Wings were when Maltby was out last time? Well, that's a biased opinion, plus they had Holmstrom last time.

I hope this is better than last nights.

I'm not wishing for any injuries at this point but I'm excited to see Abdelkader get in. If he can tone down the dumb penalties, he'll be a solid grinder for the team.

It appears that after wearing #87 at Mona Shores, #9 in Cedar Rapids, and #18 and #9 at MSU, Abdelkader will be taking over Matt Ellis' old #8 with the Red Wings.

Malik confirms some of what I posted earlier.

Bad goalie interference call on Nash. One I'd hate to see on the Wings.

There's the expected penalty for Abdelkader. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.png" />

Some great play by Datsuyk there. Shame Franzen couldn't finish it off.

I meant Datsyuk, of course. I always spell player names wrong.

A decent save by Hasek there.

What time is it there? <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.png" />The goal post robs them again. ): At least it's not as disastrous as Chicago. (knock on wood)

It's only quarter past one.A solid period there. Should really have scored though, with some great chances, especially that pass across the crease . I can't remember who it was though.

Awful coverage on the Columbus goal. Way too bunched up on the wing.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/3/2008 at 8:42 PM

Whacking away at the front of the net pays off. That makes me feel better.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/3/2008 at 8:45 PM

Didn't really see the Columbus goal. But Vive Mark Hartigan! <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.png" />

Just missed most of the period (don't ask). What happened?

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 4/3/2008 at 8:56 PM

Another slow period, even with the scoring. Nice to see Abdelkader with a big hit but even that's unimportant overall.

I've got a late soccer game tonight, I'd really like to see the Wings blow this open before I have to leave.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/3/2008 at 9:02 PM

Thanks for that. Just saw the Columbus goal. Better be a better third period, although I seem to be some kind of curse. Whenever I watch, the Wings usually lose.

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 4/3/2008 at 9:11 PM

Bloody hell, two great saves - first by Hasek and then by Leclaire.

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 4/3/2008 at 9:27 PM

Holy Christ, Abdelkader nearly got his first and then Hasek watches one go by. What a switch.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/3/2008 at 9:28 PM

Urgh, Hasek beaten beaten by another shot from the blue line. The wings just haven't been finishing off their chances. Mainly due to Leclaire.

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 4/3/2008 at 9:33 PM

Leclaire's having an incredible game! what a double save. Wow.

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 4/3/2008 at 9:43 PM

I'll catch the final minutes on DVR. Hope things turn around.

Yes! Zetterberg! from behind the net! That's the win! and the President's trophy!

Your luck has turned? <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.png" /> That was fan-freaking-tasmic! <|3 Leclaire is a good goalie. I like him, he's fast and doesn't have monstrous pads. And Zetterberg...wow. You pretty much can't be negative about him.

Posted by Mathieu_Datsyuk132351 on 4/3/2008 at 10:05 PM

Holy hell, I disappear and the Wings crank it up. I would have been happy with forcing OT but that was great. The Zetterberg goal is definitely going on the site sometime soon.

This Abdelkader guy looks like he belongs in the NHL, hopefully we can sign him up for playoffs cuz the wings are hurting right now and we need healthy bodies. As for tonights game it was hard to watch at times, but exciting playoff feeling near the end.

Posted by RideTheRedWave on 4/4/2008 at 12:20 AM

Yeah, really solid game for Abdelkader. Who needs a nickname quick or he's going to end up as "Abby" and that's just not good.

Ended up with 11:20 of ice time, almost half of it in the third after Kopy went down. 2 PIM and a -1 on the negative side. 3-for-6 on faceoffs isn't bad. One great chance on the feed from Drake. 3 shots, 3 hits.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/4/2008 at 12:52 AM

I didn't expect them to do it, especially after the second Columbus goal, just after the Abdelkader (I was just one letter out when I just typed it!wink.png miss. But fair play to them, they managed to pull it off. Now some suggested nicknames for whatshisface (don't laugh):

"The Kader kid"

"AbdelKadabra"

"Abdulla the Mullah" (later shortened to just "the Mullah" or "Abdul"wink.png

I'll go now.

The high school I go to is in the same Conference (OK Red) as Mona Shores High School, which is where Abdelkader was named Mr. Hockey a few years back. It's kind of crazy that he went to school so close to me.

Posted by choyer on 4/4/2008 at 10:40 AM

My family's all from Muskegon and my dad played hockey back when he went to Shores (before they had their own team), so its cool as hell to see Abdelkader come out of there and end up with the Wings.

I loved his quote about how all the players were introducing themselves to him and he's like, "You don't have to introduce yourselve, I know who you all are."

Tomas Kopecky is out for four-to-six months, having suffered a torn ACL and a sprained MCL in a collision with Manny Malhotra of Columbus Thursday night."It's disappointing for us, but it's really disappointing for him after missing most of the playoffs last year,'' Detroit general manager Ken Holland said. "He was starting to get more ice time and you could see his confidence growing.''With Kopecky out, Holland will sign Justin Abdelkader to an entry-level deal on Friday and the former Michigan State star will remain with the team throughout the playoffs. Abdelkader made his Red Wings debut against the Blue Jackets and took on many of Kopecky's minutes after the third-period injury.

As soon as they showed the hit on replay I knew he was done for the year. He didn't just collide and go over top of malhotra, his leg got caught under malhotra as he flew over his back. Sucks because Kopecky was playing really strong both on offense and defense. I guess the Kader fill in will due but still a big loss, so is mccarty going to fill in somewhere too?

Posted by RideTheRedWave on 4/4/2008 at 9:40 PM

His nickname is "Abs" around home.

Posted by foster016 on 4/5/2008 at 10:33 AM

I don't watch enough MSU hockey to have picked that up. Good to know.

Hi, I'm a Wings Fan from Winnipeg Manitoba! I flew to Detroit to see this game and am now back home. I was hoping to find a recording of the whole game somewhere on the internet, but have had no luck so far. I was wondering if you actually did DVR the end of the game? If so might it be possible for you to send me what you recorded?

I did have it but after I added Zetterberg's goal to the Multimedia Library, I deleted the game from my DVR. Sorry.
