BUFFALO, New York -- The Detroit Red Wings snapped a four-game losing streak Sunday night, defeating the Buffalo Sabres for just their second win in the last twelve games.
The win was a first for goalie Dominik Hasek, who had never won at HSBC Arena as a member of the opposition after spending nine seasons with the Sabres.
The game started ominously for the Red Wings, with the Sabres scoring on their first shot just 2:59 into the game.
After the puck bounced over defenseman Derek Meech's stick inside the Sabres' blue line, Buffalo rushed in on a three-on-one. Maxim Afinogenov got the puck to Patrick Kaleta in the slot for a rifled shot past Hasek, putting the Sabres up early.
Dallas Drake tied the game up with 8:04 left in the first. Niklas Kronwall came down low along the left-wing boards and threw a shot to the front of the net. Drake's tip didn't make it through but the puck bounced back off a Sabres defenseman and past goalie Ryan Miller.
A Valtteri Filppula power play goal gave the Red Wings the lead at 5:11 of the second. Tape-to-tape passing from Johan Franzen and Jiri Hudler worked the puck from the left wing to the bottom of the right faceoff cicle and back out into the slot for Filppula's tap-in.
Franzen added a goal of his own with 5:44 left in the period when Kronwall faked a blast from the top of the right circle and drew Miller to him before passing off to Franzen to put the puck in the open side of the net.
Jason Pominville briefly got Buffalo back in the game with an odd power-play goal at 3:12 of the third.
A Kirk Maltby hit along the boards in the neutral zone led to pushing and shoving between the two teams. Detroit's defenders moved in to take part but the play was never blown dead and the puck came out to Pominville, who broke in alone and put the puck past Hasek.
Kirk Maltby iced the game with 4:08 remaining, putting a one-timer past Miller from the left circle after Pavel Datsyuk won a one-on-two battle for the puck in the corner.
Hasek stopped 22 of 24 shots against his former team while Miller made 35 saves on 39 shots.
Hasek gets another start as the Wings try to work him back into shape. There don't appear to be any lineup changes for tonight, no more injured Wings back just yet.
For those of you who may not know, the game is being broadcast on FSN-Detroit. I haven't been able to find it on NBC.
I also understand you can view the game on Yahoo as a stream. I'm not sure how to view that. If anyone knows, let me know. Thanks.
Hasek starts tonight.
Wings don't appear to have much energy.
And HASEK's performance so far is marginal at best.
RYAN MILLER, Sabers goalie makes a save on a shot he didn't see. Why not HASEK?
Terrible.

I just tried the Yahoo sports Live feed and apparently its restricted in my area.
And Maltby evens things up. Yeah, Maltby.
He's not as fast as Robert Lang used to be but if you complain enough, he'll do something about it.

Yeah, keep complaining because its seems to be working in his case.

I started complaining about LANGs lackluster play last year and every time I did, its seemed like he would score a goal or assist on one.Yeah, keep complaining because its seems to be working in his case.
Thanks for the link...I had to change to a proxy IP, but now I can start watching the games they show (of course only when the Habs aren't playing). Quality is actually pretty good.

Yes, for what I understand the stream is very good quality. And its FREE (excluding the fact that you need high speed internet and there's usually a charge along with your cable).
There's also something called sopcast (an internet feed) that broadcasts live games. I'm not sure that is free or not.
More really smart passing leading to Franzen's goal. I miss seeing the team like this.
Agreed. It would be nice to see the WINGS climb out of their slump BEFORE the injured players start coming back (Rafalski, Lidstrom, Chelios and Cleary). In doing so, It would show they have it together even without their injured stars.
Sopcast free, but it's horrible...it's a user uploading video from their TV. Although the picture is small on Yahoo, the quality is excellent.
I'm trying hard not to bash the refs, but that's two goals in the last two games where play should have been blown dead.

OK thanks on the sopcast info. Can't you resize the Yahoo cast to full screen?

Haha. I thought I was computer illiterate -- technology challenged.
I'm really impressed with Filppula's skating ability. He came back with Zeta to make that least play a near goal.
