EDMONTON, Alberta -- The Detroit Red Wings moved to strengthen their blue line at the NHL trade deadline on Tuesday, picking up defenseman Brad Stuart from the Los Angeles Kings for second-round and fourth-round draft picks.
The 28-year-old defenseman had played in 63 games this season for the Kings, scoring five goals and adding 16 assists in his first campaign with Los Angeles.
A first-round selection of the San Jose Sharks in 1998, Stuart has played 570 career games over eight seasons with San Jose, Boston, Calgary and Los Angeles.
He was dealt to the Bruins in the deal that sent Joe Thornton, then traded to Calgary the following season before signing as a free agent with the Kings the in the summer of 2007.
He joins a Detroit defense currently depleted by injuries to Nicklas Lidstrom, Brian Rafalski, Niklas Kronwall and Chris Chelios.
The Avs make the first big move of the Trade Deadline and it's not even a trade, signing Peter Forsberg.
I love the trade deadline, always so much fun.
Yes, I agree. The Deadline, the start of Free Agents Signing, and the Draft are three pretty entertaining times, to be a hockey fan.

I thought it was announced a couple weeks ago that FORSBERG would DEFINITELY not be back this year? {lol}

I think being a fan of the Wings has made the draft less important to me. They pick guys you've never heard of and won't hear of again until they crack the NHL in four years and surprise the hell out of everyone.

Me too ![]()
Maybe if I cross my fingers the Wings will get rid of Maltby ![]()
Prospal to the Flyers

The Tampa firesale begins. Boyle is on my list for Detroit.
Richards to the Stars.
Not sure what went to Tampa for that.
Edit: Richards and Holmqvist for Smith, Jussi Jokinen, and Halpern.
Tampa got smoked but they were dumping salary.
Brad Stuart to the Wings for a #2 and a #4. Way to go Kenny Holland. Can we get him in the lineup tonight?
I'm hoping to see a last minute deal for the habs....
Giving up Huet for a 2nd rounder isn't enough IMHO. Better than nothing.. but I don't exactly love the idea
of the playoffs with the rookie only.
Then again... theres a reason I'm not a GM.

With some of the goalies that should have been available, they should have been able to make a move.

Habs (and anyone else hoping to trade a goalie) can thank Brian Burke for waiving Bryzgalov and totally killing the market for capable tenders.
I am glad Canadiens didn't top Pens for a rental of Hossa though.
Now I want to know what all the new numbers will be. Way too much of a dork about that.
I'll bet Brad Stuart takes #6
I think this was a really good move... granted all of our D-men will be healthy again for the playoffs, but as these past couple weeks have shown, our defense is not very good with 4 of them out of the lineup. Stuart will be a great addition. Maybe I'll finally not have to groan about Lilija's missplays. ![]()

Hahahaha. XD That was golden
Ah well, I can still groan about Maltby. Too bad Fedorov went to the Caps, I like him. It will be a sad not to see him play anymore (for a long time) with the stupid scheduling. They took Huet, too! D: Geez. I liked him also.

Since the WINGS are playing in Edmonton tonight, and we acquired Maltby from the Oilers several years ago, unless he scores at least a point tonight, why don't we just leave him out there ---- we tell him after the game, thanks for his years of service, but since he has contributed little the last 3 years or so --- we're paying his plane ticket back to Edmonton --- and will be shipping the rest of his stuff in a couple of weeks? ![]()

Nah... Just donate his stuff to the homeless...
Is anyone else amazed by Ken Holland's skill at the trade deadline? This guy is one of the most important people in the organization!

But #6 is supposed to be retired in Detroit. It was retired but no one ever raised a banner for it, then Ilitch unretired it (for reasons unknown) but hasn't let anyone wear it (which is why Lilja wears #3). It's complicated.

They either need to "retire" it as the GM/Coach of many years ago did (Can't recall his name now), or un-retire it (which ILITCH would have to do, since he's the one who's dragged his feet), and let someone else wear the number.
Personally, my feeling at this point, is no one, or very few fans, even remembers the guy who originally wore that number years ago, when it was retired, except his family and friends, so as to a fan base who would be offended, that probably would not be a factor. But ILITCH will have to live with it either way.
Goofy situation for sure.

Here's an article on #6 Larry Aurie, a Red Wing legend.
Ahhh, Aurie... I forgot.
Yeah, that can't be taken... But I think they need to retire it.
But at this point I think it's kind of like 16. No one can wear it, but it's not retired.
I bet he wears something with a 6 in it... if not he'll be #4 or #8

I've got a rant about the #6 but it doesn't fit here so I'll save it for later.
Since Quincey is up right now and has #4, I'd think #8 it is. I keep forgetting that's open with Ellis gone.
Edit: FSN just answered. #23 (I'd imagine something like 2 x 3 = 6 but maybe I'm reading into it too much)
I was sad when they said he was taking 23. But oh well, it is just a sport/business.
Goodbye, old days of Mathieu Schneider!
When is Stuart expected to play in a game?
Im not sure why you like Matheiu Schneider so much, especially after how he peaced out from Detroit last season. Maybe you should switch your liking over to Brian Rafalski, seeing as how Schneider is long gone.
Anyways, It should be interesting to see how Stuart plays against the Sharks. If the trade deadline tradition continues (which we hope it wont), then he will score his 1st Detroit goal on his first shot... and then it will be all down hill from there. (Cory Cross, Kyle Calder)

I am no convenience fan! >:| Mathieu Schneider was my first favorite hockey player, and I am trying to keep it that way as long as possible (besides Dr. Fil). I don't even like Rafalski that much at all, I mean, he's ok to keep around, but he's not exactly the best defensemen either, if you catch my opinion. So what if Schneider is long gone, it's part of the game.
Oh well, back on subject, I am happy Stuart is coming to play in the Sharks game. I love the Sharks! ![]()
I cant wait to see Derek Meech a few years from now. I'm sure he'll evolve into a super solid player. Also, Schneider is trash.
Hossa left Pittsburgh's game in second period tonight. I'll laugh if Pittsburgh give up a large chunk of their future for Pascal Dupuis and 10 minutes of Hossa.
Update - Grade one MCL - out a couple weeks...knee to knee collision
2 weeks = 8 games. So, he gets to play a whole 9 games for them because we all know he will disappear in the playoffs. Then again, perhaps Crosy or Malkin can just slingshot it off his shins or something. Sure glad whatever those 4 elements were they wanted from the HABS didn't go over.

I laughed when I saw it, but I'm evil. Glad to see I'm not the only one.
