CALGARY, Alberta -- Missing half of their regular defensive corps, the Detroit Red Wings fell to the Calgary Flames Friday night in a 1-0 game that saw them lose one more blueliner.
Chris Chelios left the game in the first period after blocking a shot with the back of his leg. He attempted to return for the second period but was unable to take a shift.
With with a shorthanded defense, the Wings allowed only one goal.
The only tally of the game was scored on a broken play with 8:06 left in the first. Alex Tanguay sent the puck out front from behind the net but it deflected off the stick of Pavel Datsyuk before hitting Brett Lebda's shoulder and bouncing over goaltender Chris Osgood.
Osgood finished the night with 25 saves on 26 shots. Calgary netminder Miikka Kiprusoff stopped all 38 shots he faced.
Notes: Should Chelios be unable to play on Saturday in Vancouver, the Red Wings will call up either Garrett Stafford or Jakub Kindl from the Grand Rapids Griffins.
The injured Wings take on the Flames in a couple minutes. The #1 defenseman tonight for Detroit is Chris Chelios, that's how injured they are. Lilja, Lebda, Meech, Quincey and Jonathan Ericsson round out the blueline corps.
Osgood gets the start against Kiprusoff.
You're kidding me. Chelios goes down. The Wings' top four defenseman are out right now.
I say they put Samuelsson on defense if Chelios is seriously hurt. Is he still on the bench? (I am aware I have eyes but I am doing like, 5 billion things at once right now)
Next game, if he is still out, we keep Sammy on defense and bring up Darren Helm for GR!!!! ![]()
Dirty hit by Phaneuf. Anyone expect less from the Flames? At least it wasn't their backup goalie this time.
Hello, haven't been around or been watching much hockey lately. Tuned in to some dodgy online stream near the end of the 2nd period. Let's hope the Wings can continue the pressure into the 3rd period, and more importantly make it pay off.

Welcome back Britishwingsfan. Hopefully you can bring the WINGS some good luck too.
Always good to hear when the Wings are actually available (via dodgy methods or not) overseas. Hopefully the Wings can pull something out here so your efforts are rewarded.
Detroit's really playing a pretty good game. I worry just because Kipper's been so solid.
Kiprusof seems to pull rabbits out of his hat against the WINGS.
Not just the Wings, he's pretty good like that.
Kipprusoff's been looking really solid, from what I've seen, and great, off air. Back to radio for me. I've been taunting a flames fan who's at the game on another (non-hockey) forum, and I'm going to look like a total idiot if the Wings lose. Things aren't looking (or rather sounding) good at the moment, the flames seem on top. But Wings Powerplay coming up.....
I've gotta say, I didn't expect an injured goalie and the Griffins defense to be this strong tonight. Hard to believe that that might not be Detroit's weakness.

Yes, but the WINGS have controlled the play this period -- have dominated in fact -- with many scoring chances but just can't get that break to put the puck in the net.
In the end... You're f*cking kidding me. The Walking Wounded Wings allow a single goal, a fluky one at that, and still can't get the win. I watched the game so I believe it, but if I saw this score without watching the game I'd be shocked.
Tough one for the WINGS, but they played well. Babcock should feel good about the effort, especially the young D.
Urgh, just one of those games I suppose. Great effort though. Wish I could be making my 100th post in better circumstances.
Will be interesting if CHELIOS is out for tomorrow's game in Vancouver.
I'm hoping Kindl is the one to get the call if he can't. The Wings have high hopes for him and I'd like to see what he can do.
On a similar note, Ericsson looked really good out there tonight. Nice to see the Wings have some really solid depth on the blueline, just need to be able to move the puck a little better. Rafalski's really missed on the power play (Lidstrom goes without saying).
Did no one stay up for the game last night? I'm surprised to see lack of commentary in the media on Phaneuf's hit on Kopecky the morning after, given how much buzz there usually is about hits to the head.
Only because it was against the Wings. If that would have been against any other team the Media would have been all over it. Phaneuf is a dirty player and always has been, even though he gets compared to Scott Stevens because of his hard hits. His hits are always very dirty, at least Stevens caught you on open ice with your head down.

I commented on it ...... "Phaneuf is a marked man" .... or words to that effect.
I thought maybe he was free game for DOWNEY, but then DOWNEY went down and I wondered if maybe he was injured and not up to the task.
I'm sure DOWNEY has a good memory. If the WINGS see the FLAMES again --- as in the play-offs -- I'm thinking there will be a "reckoning" .

Right, I was that at the time, I just meant that the media didn't say much today. Of course, the Detroit papers might not have anyone out West right now.
