DENVER, Colorado -- The Detroit Red Wings ended their losing streak at six games Monday night, earning a 4-0 victory over the host Colorado Avalanche to complete a sweep of the season series between the two teams.
Goaltender Chris Osgood made 18 saves to pick up the shutout after being pulled from each of his last two starts. It marked Detroit's third blanking of the Avalanche this season.
Detroit's victory came even after losing captain Nicklas Lidstrom to injury in the first period. Lidstrom left the game with what the team called a slight knee sprain after a hit from Ian Laperriere.
Aaron Downey later fought Laperriere.
The Red Wings got on the board with 7:57 left in the first period on Chris Chelios' second goal of the season. Pavel Datsyuk sent out a pass from down low that Tomas Holmstrom let slide past him in the slot to Chelios at the blue line. His shot slipped through traffic and past Jose Theodore to give Detroit the lead.
Valtteri Filppula put the Red Wings up by a pair with just 56 seconds left in the opening frame, gathering up the rebound from his own shot from the slot to roof it over Theodore at the side of the net.
Henrik Zetterberg scored a pair of goals in the second to wrap up the scoring.
At 7:42 he scored with the Red Wings on a two-man advantage, taking a cross-crease pass from Pavel Datsyuk to score into the open side of the net.
Just 2:16 later he added another, taking a drop pass from Datsyuk and cutting through the slot, waiting for Theodore to dive before putting a shot past him.
Theodore finished the night with 36 saves on 40 Detroit shots.
The Red Wings finished the game two-for-five on the power play. The Avalance couldn't score on any of their three tries.
At this hour, As to tonights game in Denver, starting goalie is still undecided.
Howard's used to playing a lot of games in a row, so you can go with him. I say go with Osgood, though. The same reason why I say you go with Hasek in the playoffs if he's healthy, you go with your #1 guy.
Chelios gets the Wings out in front! Smart, smart play by Holmstrom to let the pass get back to Cheli.
Looks like Ian Lapperiere went to the Claude Lemeiux School of Turtling. Is that a learned skill or do they just grow them like that out in Denver?
YAY FOR DR. FIL!

[Any updates on Lidstrom?]
Very much liking where this game is going. Ozzie looks strong and the Wings scoring is clicking, even if half of it's been on the power play. I missed Filppula's goal while on the phone with a client, though.
Awesome plays by Pavel and Zetterburg! ![]()
I really do like this game, too! It's nice to be on the winning side again!
Freep's notes on Lidstrom...
Lidstrom did not suffer a concussion, according to team spokesman John Hahn. And while the knee injury didn't appear serious, he was held out of the remainder of Monday's game for precautionary reasons.
It is very nice to see the wings playing like they should be.
I'm still not completely sold though.
Either way....
I'm kind of suprised...it almost looks like the Avs/Redwings rivalry hasn't completely died afterall! ![]()
although it more looks like it's just desperate avs players.
I will shed a tear for nick Lidstrom tonight. ![]()
Nice shutout! Hopefully Nick will be back in action real soon. I hate to say it but we need him like a fish needs water
This game is why I haven't been too worried through the skid. Solid game all around, the kind of game the Wings are used to playing.
Now lets just hope that Lidstrom is alright and everything's back to good.
Let's not forget about Kronwall & Ralfalski, guys! >:|
That game was fan-freakin'-tastic!
I mean, I was so happy to watch it. It kept my attention the whole game! So, in the words of Mathieu Schneider, "stellar".
Probably my favorite game out of the whole season (besides the two where Valtteri scored two goals each!![]()
I am still happy ![]()
