DETROIT, Michigan -- The Detroit Red Wings ended a three-game winless streak on Thursday, defeating the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 in a game decided by a shootout.
Henrik Zetterberg scored the only goal of the tiebreaker, slipping a backhander through the pads of Roberto Luongo on Detroit's second shot.
"Simple, yet brilliant," Luongo said of the goal. "He carried it on the forehand, slid it to the backhand, waited for me to open up and went five hole."
Dan Cleary scored both of the Red Wings' regulation goals, putting the team up by two before a Vancouver comeback.
With 1:44 left in the first period Cleary got the Red Wings on the board, tipping an Andreas Lilja shot from the point. The puck bounced down to the ice, up off Luongo's glove, and into the net.
Just 1:51 into the second he added another. Valtteri Filppula won a battle for the puck along the right wing boards, moved into the high slot, and worked it down low to Cleary in front of the net for a tip past Luongo.
The Canucks tied the game up before the end of the period.
With 4:39 left, Sami Salo fired a blast from the point. Dominik Hasek came out of the Detroit net to make the stop but the rebound came right to Henrik Sedin to put into the open net.
Markus Naslund evened things up with 1:52 remaining, spinning around a defender in the right circle and throwing the puck to the front of the net, where it deflected off of Brian Rafalski's skate and past Hasek.
Hasek finished the night with 26 saves on 28 shots. Luongo stopped 47 of Detroit's 49 chances.
Neither team scored on the power play. The Red Wings had three tries with the extra attacker while the Canucks had two.
If you think they'll snap the losing streak, say 'Aye!'?
(I have no answer as of right now)
I won't be home for the game, but thanks to good, ol' fashioned VCR's I will catch up in a few days....hopefully.
You guys try & leave me something funny to read when I get back! ![]()
(Hopefully have a new name for Kronwall, also? XD)
Here's to wishing they'll win and Dr. Fil and PVD will score a goal!
(I don't know of any game notes, sorry, but I am a horrible commentator
)
Surprises could come at the morning skate but it looks like Downey remains in with Drake still out and Hasek gets the start.

I predict that the Kroninator will open up the scoring with PP goal. Lidstrom and Datsyuk will get the assists.

Hey "KRONINATOR"? How will the DOMINATOR feel about that? Can't have two "Nators" on the same team.
Nope, no good. Lets try again.
And whats wrong with KRONBALLS??
This should be a great mental test for the WINGS. They've lost their last 3 games, If I recall, another loss, will be the longest losing streak since before BABCOCK took over.
This should be interesting.
Wings got back on their heels and it gives the Canucks the chance to get back in the game. No panic yet but the next one is big.
Had there been any rebound on that Datsyuk chance, it's in the net with Homer on the doorstep. Good job by Luongo to hold on.
Did I hear 32-17 SOG?
Yes, but as usual most of the WINGS shots were 30-40 feeters, angle shots that Roberto will stop every time.
The WINGS need to put some pressure in front of Luongo to win this.
Homer was just robbed by Luongo.
Cleary will go for the Hat Trick.
CLEARY was Just ABSOLUTELY robbed by LUONGO!
Dawg, diggity DOG
Good end-to-end action.
Officiating has been noteworthy as well, given as physical as both teams have played.
Still would like to see CLEARY rewarded!
Pretty solid game overall. Very important to come out of the slump before going out west.
Dom played big in the shootout.
