Red Wings Fall Short Against Senators

In a matchup that could be a preview of this spring's Stanley Cup Finals, the Detroit Red Wings' third-period comeback wasn't enough as the Western Conference's leaders fell to the Eastern Conference-leading Ottawa Senators, 3-2.

The Red Wings scored twice in the third period to tie the game but a late Ottawa power play goal gave the Senators the win.

Ottawa got on the board just 1:09 into the game on a power play when Daniel Alfredsson scored on a blast from the blue line.

Mike Fisher put the Senators up by a pair at 3:26 of the second. A Chris Chelios turnover put the puck on the stick of Luke Richardson, who sprung Fisher into the Detroit zone on a 3-on-2. Fisher raced in on goal and put a shot on Red Wings' netminder Dominik Hasek, then poked the rebound past him.

Detroit began the comeback with a power play goal by Brian Rafalski at 7:46 of the third. Pavel Datsyuk got the puck after coming across the ice to help a two-on-two battle for the puck on the right wing boards. He tapped it along to Rafalski, who jumped in from the blue line for a blast over the glove of Ottawa goaltender Ray Emery.

With 7:54 left in the period, Nicklas Lidstrom fired a shot from the blue line wide of the net and off the back boards. The puck came out high into the left circle and Hudler stepped up to rifle a shot to the top corner of the net.

Alfredsson's second of the night negated the Detroit comeback. With 2:56 left in the game, Alfredsson's acute-angle shot from the bottom of the right circle slipped through a Jason Spezza screen and past Hasek for a power play goal.

Hasek finished the night with 29 saves on 32 shots against. Emery made 27 saves on 29 Detroit shots.

Notes: Ottawa's Dany Heatley left the game with a shoulder injury and did not return.

It looks like Zetterberg will give it a shot tonight, after sitting out this morning with the flu. In the most-hyped game in awhile, the Wings will have their full lineup.

Hasek gets the start with Ray Emery going for Ottawa.

I've got this feeling that if you were looking for a game to bet against the Wings on, this would be it.

Nice pre-game ceremony for Yzerman going into Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame...Don't see that in the other team's barn too often.

Do you wanna wager on this one? I'm game if you are.

So much for trying to take a lead ._.

XD Ouch. 1:10 in. Oh well, this will be entertaining I'm sure.

I stick to table games, I hate betting on sports.Mickey's having fun with the weak calls. With the hooks that have been called, I'm surprised they didn't call interference when Cleary was held up after dumping it in on that second Sens PP.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 1/12/2008 at 7:33 PM

For once the stupid calls seem to be going against both teams. I have to admit Mickey has been pretty funny tonight!

Posted by SYfanSD on 1/12/2008 at 7:37 PM

We need to capitalize on this one

OK .... you would have had to give me an Ottawa win by two goals anyway. I only say this because of the SENS PP goal after only a minute into the game.and, as for the calls so far, MICKEY R is 100% correct ---- pure garbage. But, at least it looks they are calling them both ways! So far at least, anyway.

Posted by skyguy52 on 1/12/2008 at 7:44 PM

Hehehe. MICKY is quite animated tonight and rightfully so ...... how about that SENATOR taking down the WING (not sure who it was) just as the WING PP ended????

Jeepers.

Bounces in front of EMERY are not going the WINGS way so far either

Finally a delay of game call that goes in our favor.

Is anyone watching this on CBC? I have on on both FSN-D and CBC. Its interesting the differences in commentary ...hehehe

Posted by skyguy52 on 1/12/2008 at 7:52 PM

What goof-ball Don Cherry is ... hehe. But you have to love him too, especially his attire .... He wore some multi colored suit during the broadcast a few weeks ago. Looked liked a used car saleman to the third degree. Too funny.

Posted by skyguy52 on 1/12/2008 at 7:54 PM

I miss getting CBC, I haven't had it since I moved across town a couple years ago. Ken and Mickey are great but I'd love to see what someone else has to say about the officiating.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 1/12/2008 at 8:01 PM

HASEK is looking bad ..... from my vantage point {haha} he should have had that one.

Well, Clarke theres your two goals ...

Posted by skyguy52 on 1/12/2008 at 8:13 PM

Well, I do enjoy HNIC ...... and CHERRY is a hoot ..... his suits ... his commentary, especially the banter between him and the other guy in COACH'S CORNER (don't know the name of the other guy) .. anyway, I feel fortunate to get another hockey channel besides FSN-D and Versus.

Posted by skyguy52 on 1/12/2008 at 8:16 PM

No CBC here! What a bunch of bullsh*t this is! And can we score a friggin goal?

OMG I LOVEEEEEE DON CHERRY! XD My brother and I think he should run Canada. He should, it would be so funny. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.png" /> You are now the greatest person on this site <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.png" />This game looks like it's lost already XD

Posted by Mathieu_Datsyuk132351 on 1/12/2008 at 8:21 PM

By the way, the CBC HNIC play-by-play announcer reminds me alot of BUD LYNCH, the old-time RED WING announcer.

Does anyone here remember the voice of BUD LYNCH?

I know no one here will remember FOSTER HEWETT, the old time HNIC announcer, from many, many years ago. But, I Do. I'm talking the early to mid 60s and maybe into the early 70s. Guess that really dates me.

Posted by skyguy52 on 1/12/2008 at 8:23 PM

Wings defense with bad giveaways and offense isn't getting any good shots.

Really, really odd that the goalie interference wasn't called when Dom got knocked down but was when it was Emery in the first.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 1/12/2008 at 8:23 PM

If that would have been Homer hitting Emery it would have been a penalty

Haha. Thanks. Yes he is a hoot .... Never seen so many wild suits and ties worn by anyone like he does .... and how about those shirt collars? WOW ..As for the game already being lost ... well, unfortunately I tend to believe you. But this should be a good TEST for the RED WINGS .... Top Team in the Eastern Conference ..... OTTAWA is still only 10 points behind the RED WINGS in total points, but they've also played 3 games less ......so, if Ottawa can pick up 2 here and a few more in their game played deficit, they will threaten Detroit's point standing.

Posted by skyguy52 on 1/12/2008 at 8:27 PM

Well, so far it definitely looks like OTTAWA wants this win more than the RED WINGS. WINGS seem off balance due to effective pressure on all sides by the SENS. The WINGS don't go down 2 goals very often. Bad feeling here.

Posted by skyguy52 on 1/12/2008 at 8:33 PM

Bad feeling here.

Just now? I got mine during the first goal. ): Usually it the Wings doing that, not the opposing team.

Posted by Mathieu_Datsyuk132351 on 1/12/2008 at 8:36 PM

Heatley hurt? The Wings could use all the help they can get, I hope shaken up and fine but can't return for the night.

Way to go Raffy! Great shot, smart pass by Pavs.

Posted by Mathieu_Datsyuk132351 on 1/12/2008 at 9:16 PM

Up to this point the SENS have done yeomans' work in shutting down the WINGS machine coming thru the middle ... a lot like the old NJ DEVILS trap ..... lets see how the WINGS can adjust now that they are back in the game .....

Posted by skyguy52 on 1/12/2008 at 9:17 PM

Since the goal, the Wings look a lot better.

Edit: Until Dom decided to go for a stroll.

We have ourselves a real hockey game here now.

Posted by skyguy52 on 1/12/2008 at 9:33 PM

Well, that was something the Wings didn't want. And I think they got away with a bit there.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 1/12/2008 at 9:34 PM

I saw that goal coming when Lidstrom went to the box.

T_T

It screamed 'HAHAHA' in a menacing way.

Damnit! Hell of a screen by Spezza.

The dude's almost 43 though, I mean, it shouldn't be an excuse but no one's that great all the time.(he is still my favorite if I have any say)._. What a sad day. (This just makes me mad, why couldn't they do this to Anaheim in the playoffs? >:|)

Even I can't blame Dom there, like I said, hell of a screen by Spezza.3-2 Ottawa is actually the score I predicted earlier when asked elsewhere. I wasn't going to mention it because I didn't want it to come true.

Well, looking at it again, SPEZZA did make a good screen. LIDSTROM in the box too, which is a rarity.I'll give DOM the benefit of the doubt, He earlier made a game saver .... I'll say it again, This was a great game, at a great time in the season. Lets see how each team adjusts to the other's great play.We may see both teams again on the rink together at the same time.
