Filppula's Penalty Shot Helps Red Wings Past Panthers

For the second time in three games, Valtteri Filppula scored on a penalty shot attempt, helping the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-2 win over the visiting Florida Panthers.

Filppula's goal was the final goal of the game, coming with 8:43 left in the third period. Florida goalie Tomas Vokoun threw his stick while Filppula tried to score, forcing an automatic penalty shot.

On the chance, Filppula tried the same move that was successful on Monday night in Nashville. Vokoun didn't fall for the fake but missed on an attempted poke check, giving Filppula room to score on the stick side.

It was the second penalty shot of the night for the Red Wings. Pavel Datsyuk missed on a chance 3:29 earlier after being tripped while going to the goal.

Datsyuk had opened the game's scoring at 6:18 of the first, with Detroit on a five-on-three. Brian Rafalski sent the puck down from the high slot to Henrik Zetterberg, parked to Vokoun's left. Zetterberg sent a cross-crease pass to Datsyuk who put it back in the middle, banking it in off of Vokoun.

The Panthers rallied and then took the lead on a pair of lucky bounces in the second period.

Just 46 seconds in, Olli Jokinen threw the puck across the crease. It bounced off of defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom and floated into the net.

Only 4:13 later, Radek Dvorak put the puck out front. Chris Chelios attempted to clear but knocked it off of his own skate and across the goal line, putting Florida out in front.

A power play goal by Johan Franzen pulled the Red Wings back into a tie at 8:58 of the period. With Detroit on a power play and Rostislav Olesz hurt, the Red Wings controlled the puck long enough for Niklas Kronwall to work it down low to Jiri Hudler. Hudler couldn't control it but it bounced to the other side of the crease where Franzen put it home.

The Red Wings took over in the third, scoring twice in 1:04 before Filppula's penalty shot finished things off.

Dan Cleary scored at 5:40 of the period putting home a rebound chance and Brian Rafalski added a power play goal with a rifled shot from the blue line that deflected over Vokoun's shoulder.

Detroit finished the night with a season-high 46 shots, of which 41 were stopped by Vokoun. Goaltender Chris Osgood stopped 33 of Florida's 35 chances for his fifteenth win of the season.

The Red Wings are back in action on Monday night when they host the Washington Capitals.

Notes: It was the first game in Red Wings history to feature two Detroit penalty shot attempts... The win was head coach Mike Babcock's 200th.

Goalie matchup tonight: Osgood vs. Vokoun. The Detroit goalie rotation continues and Florida goes with a goalie the Red Wings are very familar with from his days with the Nashville Predators.

The Wings are still without Draper, Maltby and Holmstrom.

Good to get the early goal, even if it took a five-on-three. Vokoun has the tendency to blank the Wings. Or seems to.

A typical WING 1st Period. Lots of shots on net. Lots of puck control. A 16-8 shot differential, producing a ONE goal lead. Their goal came on a 5-3 power play advantage. The Panthers should consider they won the period. Vakoun was easily the best player. Didn't see any Red Jersey stand out. Despite a lack luster performance, I certainly appreciate ONE up at the end of ONE.

Wow, never seen a goal go in off of Lidstrom before. Hopefully that doesn't give Florida any momentum.

Wow. You'll never see two goals in off of Wings defenders in one game ever again.

DRAKE with a couple of rare scoring opportunities (one a good feed from Zeta), but neither find their way past VAKOUN.

The game has decidedly turned into dog doodoo for the WINGS.

VAKOUN still easily the best player.

THe other best players for the PANTHERS are the WINGS D .....

I Haven't seen a real serious effort so far by the RED JERSEYS

Nice work byHUDLER and FRANZEN on the 2nd goal. Another power play goal (5 on 3 for all practical purposes).

I felt the pain OUCH! of the PANTHER (not sure of his name) who blocked the shot with an ankle. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

WOW What a ending to the 2nd! Final 9 seconds could have saw either team take the lead again, or it ending tied at 3 instead of tied at 2!

FRANZEN's TIP earlier ended up in my living room too!

Wings looked a lot worse early in the second. Turned it around a little bit later in the period.

Clears capitalizing on the rare rebound chance. Good to see, can't blow those opportunities.

Nice to see CLEARY rewarded. Bad Break for VAKOUN. He had the puck stopped, but opened the five hole just a bit, Presumably to see where the puck was, and it was just enough for CLEARY to poke it through.

Nice job.

Well, The WING D are redeeming themselves! Nice JOB RAFFIE!

Damnit! Ken and Mickey are right, same move as in the shootout vs. Edmonton.

VAKOUN did a nice job on PAVs Penalty shot!

Identical. PAV has to get it up (No PUN Intended) or try something else.

And Babcock gets Win number 200!

Posted by SYfanSD on 12/15/2007 at 9:30 PM

Very ENTERTAINING game. W2G WINGS!

BABs 200th Win! OZZIE apparently didn't know that either. He had possession of the game puck but through it to fan as he was skating off the ice.

Oh well.

It was. Early in the game the best two offensive players for the PANTHERS were the WING D.

Posted by skyguy52 on 12/15/2007 at 9:43 PM

Solid game for the Wings. Weak bit in the second period but strong for the rest of the game.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 12/15/2007 at 9:48 PM

Despite the weak play in the second I was happy with the outcome. Let's get another unbeaten streak going!
