Streak Continues as Red Wings Hold Off Predators

The Detroit Red Wings extended their winning streak to seven games Monday night, holding off a comeback attempt by the Nashville Predators to earn a 2-1 victory.

Martin Gelinas scored a shorthanded goal late in the second period to cut a 2-0 Detroit lead in half but the Predators were unable to beat goalie Chris Osgood in the third period as the Red Wings survived to get the win.

The Gelinas goal came with just 24 seconds left in the middle period. David Legwand drove the net with the puck and went down in front of Osgood, leaving Gelinas free to put a shot under the goaltender's pads and into the net.

Tomas Kopecky had gotten the Red Wings on the board at 7:10 of the first period. Pavel Datsyuk fought off a hit by Jordin Tootoo and carried the puck down the left wing and into the Nashville zone before sending a cross-ice pass to Kopecky for a one-timer past Nashville netminder Dan Ellis.

The eventual game-winner was scored with 4:54 left in the period, when Valtteri Filppula was awarded a penalty shot after being tripped up by Jerred Smithson while breaking in on Ellis. Filppula looked to his forehand but was closed off, then switched to his backhand and lifted a shot into the net.

Neither team scored a power play goal on the night. Detroit had six chances with the extra attacker and Nashville had seven.

Osgood stopped 30 of 31 Nashville shots for his 14th win of the season. Ellis made 33 saves on 35 Detroit shots.

Notes: Derek Meech replaced defenseman Chris Chelios in the Detroit lineup, with the Red Wings attempting to keep Chelios from playing on back-to-back nights.

Both teams will be going with their backups in net tonight. Chris Osgood gets the start for the Red Wings after Dominik Hasek went last night. Dan Ellis will go for Nashville with Chris Mason out with the flu.

I'll miss the first period live but will rejoin this thread once I've caught up.

So, Osgood is still considered backup goalie? Hmm.

Oh well, as long as the Wings win I guess it doesn't matter much. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/rock.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":therock:" border="0" alt="rock.gif" />

Yeah, I don't think I can call him the starter since Dom's back to playing well and the Wings never stopped calling Hasek the starter.

Okay, I'm caught up.

Wow.

Some of the Wings kids are on fire. Kopecky, Filppula, Hudler and Kronwall are playing with some real confidence.

And I still want to see someone beat the hell out of Tootoo.

Notewothy is DETROIT SOG end of first is 17 Vs 9 for Nashville. Puck control is Key. Many teams don't get 17 SOG for the entire game against the WINGS. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/rock.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":therock:" border="0" alt="rock.gif" />

I knew there was another reason I loved Valtteri Filppula <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/rock.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":therock:" border="0" alt="rock.gif" />

Great Penalty Killing by the WINGS. OZZIE is playing with confidence, & positioning well to shooters.

There is definately something wrong with the calls tonight. Lots of crap calls!

Of note: The last four games I have watched Detroit has had at least three to four shots on goal in the first minute of play

WTF? Legwand was in the damn crease!

That sucks! Shorthanded goal

Bad break for the WINGS (Ozzie in particular), but the PREDS deserved the SH goal! That was not an easy goal.

Looks like we may be in for an interesting 3rd Period. Overall the WINGS are holding up well for having played last nite in a hard fought game at the JLA, and on-the-road tonight for a quick turnaround <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> .

Looking forward to the third. Hopefully the stupid ass calls will stop

Nashville could have won this one, Wings did a good job of holding on at the end and Osgood was big again. Expected to get tired at the end, playing last night.

Post-game, Mickey York just called Osgood the last Red Wings goalie to play in the All-Star game. I may be wearing his jersey from that game right now, but I know that's wrong. Osgood went to the 1996 game but Hasek went to Los Angeles for the ASG in 2002.

I thought that sounded wrong when he said it, and I've only been watching for a year. Geez. x] Just like the last penalty shot scoring, cause I knew Cleary scored on that. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> They finally cleared it up at the end(!?!?!wink.png of the game though and reminded that his was during the playoffs. But still, it upset me until they corrected that. Just like most people, I dislike being wrong. XD
