DETROIT, Michigan -- The Detroit Red Wings earned a 3-2 shootout win over the Anaheim Ducks Wednesday night, opening their season with a victory over the team that elminated them from the playoffs last spring.
Jiri Hudler scored the only goal of the shootout, faking out goalie Ilya Bryzgalov in the third round. Bryzgalov had previously stopped Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg, while Detroit goalie Dominik Hasek made saves on Todd Bertuzzi, Ryan Getzlaf, and Corey Perry.
The Red Wings got on the board first with a power play goal by Zetterberg at 9:46 of the first period. Left all alone in the right faceoff circle, Zetterberg wristed a shot over Bryzgalov's shoulder.
The Ducks tied things up with 5:28 remaining in the second. A shot by Perry deflected off the skate of Detroit defenseman Andreas Lilja and to the slot, where former Red Wing Bertuzzi grabbed it and wristed it past Hasek.
Bertuzzi connected with Getzlaf for Anaheim's second goal, scored on the power play with 42 seconds remaining in the period.
Tomas Holmstrom tied the game at 4:04 of the third period on another power play goal. After a blast by Brian Rafalski, the puck came to Zetterberg at the side of the net. He threw it out front and Holmstrom lifted it over Bryzgalov.
Rafalski wasn't the only Red Wings newcomer to make his presence felt, as Dallas Drake got in a second-period fight with Perry.
Hasek made 13 saves on 15 shots against. Bryzgalov stopped 40 of 42 Detroit shots.
Detroit went two-for-seven on the power play while Anaheim was one-for-five.
The Red Wings are back in action on Saturday when they visit the Chicago Blackhawks, featuring former Red Wing Robert Lang.
The Wings open their season tonight with the Stanley Cup Champion Anaheim Ducks coming to town. The Ducks are coming off of a split with the LA Kings in a "home-and-home" series played in London.
Detroit is expected to sit Ellis, Downey and Meech. Anaheim will be without former Red Wing Mathieu Schneider, one of two offseason defections to the Ducks. The other, Todd Bertuzzi, will be in the lineup tonight.
Weak call on the Wings but at the end of the first with five seconds left on the Ducks' PP, looks like it's killed off. Detroit got faster throughout the period.
Kopecky with the retaliatory late hit on Pronger, surprised that wasn't called but I'm glad to see him throwing his weight around.
Wings skating, shooting and passing well in both ends. Wings playing a very good two-way game. Just a quick comment on one Wing in particular -- FILPULA -- who is looking like and skating a lot like FEDOROV, when Sergie Fedorov was on his game. Refreshing to see DALLAS DRAKE willing and able to take the gloves off and go after the chicken PERRY who is bigger and younger ...... Can't wait to have AARON DOWNEY in the line-up for a little more muscle. Go WINGS!
How come Bertuzzi couldn't do that as a Red Wing?
Unfortunately, BERTUZZI, is looking like the BERTOOZI of old -- i.e. that position play he just made on LILIA ...... LILIA goes to the box .... and WALLA the DUCKS score!
I really can't stand Bertuzzi! Hopefully we come out with a W on this one. I have to say the Wings are looking good, especially Drake with a drop of the gloves in the first game of the season.

Well, BERTUZZI doesn't really bother me. He never did. He does what he does, which is score ugly goals and use his size to out-position opponents. Unfortunately, He seems to be back on his game, albeit early yet in the season, but he appears to be back on his game. I just wish he had it for last year's play-off run. We could have used him..................
I say screw him! We are more than capable without him or Schneider!
Not sure what was up with that double minor to Lilja, looks like the refs are already off to a good start this season ![]()
Way to go Homer! Tie game! ![]()
Damn, Raffy, that was an awful giveaway.
Shootout. Well, lets get these out of the way early. At the very least, we've got the loser point.
Snow Angel! Nice one for the DOMINATOR, and it couldn't have been at a better time .... NO Way PERRY ... Great Game!

hahahha! I loved when they said that!
If only the game would have been on FSNDet, it would have been 1011132339518191x better.
FYI, I've got the Drake-Perry fight posted to the Multimedia section.
Thanks for posting the link to the DRAKE-PERRY scrap, but I can't get the link to work. Anyone else having problems with it?
I know Mathieu_Datsyuk132351 has problems with the Multimedia section. I've been trying to work out a solution for awhile.
Edit: Going through my logs, it looks like you're not having the same problem that she is. Are you able to view anything else in the Multimedia section?

I am unable to view video clips. I seem to be able to view the Photographs OK. However, When I click on the link to the video clip, a screen comes up, but when I click on the play button, nothing happens.
I'm using Mozilla Firefox. I'm not sure that would make any difference. Other than being unable to view the video clips in the multimedia section, I seem to be able to view the photos.
Thanks for your help.
All my posts summed into one. =)
Just a quick comment on one Wing in particular -- FILPPULA --
Achhh! You spelled his name wrong T_T oh well.
HASEK has looked good too, especially on the break-away by MOWERS.
Hasek always looks good ;D

Spelled another name wrong xD (Lilja)
I really can't stand Bertuzzi!
Me either, couldn't when he was a wing, either ![]()

But Schneider was amazing D= I disagree with the Mathieu part, but agree with Bertuzzi being gone. And Yes, Holmstrom is fcking amazing <333
xD no need to apologize, just pointing it out.
How cool, you joined up on my birthday!
Therefore, you are special. xD J/k. Ignore me. xD ![]()
So I am at Universal Studios sporting a Red Wings T-shirt, this guy comes up and starts gloating about the Ducks winning the cup last year. I say" Oh yeah"? Name two of the Ducks... He responds with Paul Kariya and Jim Mckenzie....
Where do these people come from? At least be able to name somebody on the team before you run your mouth!

Haha. I doubt they even know how ice is made out there. I'm sure they think HOCKEYTOWN is an amusement park and the Original Six is a six pack of bottled water too.
Most people in SoCal did not know much about Hockey until the Great One arrived in LA. That being said they still don't know anything other than the Ducks won some kind of championship
Last year I went to a game on Mar first at the "Honda Center" and saw more Wings jerseys than anything else.
Now all you see is Ducks jerseys.
Just goes to show that the only Hockey they know is Bandwagon... Makes me sick!
Oh yeah, Yzerman is some kind of shoe company ![]()
