DETROIT, Michigan -- The Anaheim Ducks never led on Sunday but they didn't need to. Teemu Selanne scored with 8:03 remaining in overtime to give the Ducks a 2-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings, pushing them to a 3-2 series lead in their Western Conference Final matchup.
Selanne's goal came after Andy MacDonald forced a turnover by Detroit blueliner Andreas Lilja. Selanne picked up the loose puck and skated in alone on goalie Dominik Hasek, who sprawled out to cover the bottom half of the net before Selanne roofed a shot over him.
Lilja had scored Detroit's only goal of the game at 6:13 of the second period, blasting a shot past Anaheim netminder Jean-Sebastien Giguere off a pass from Dan Cleary, who had circled back after gaining the Anaheim zone to allow Lilja time to catch up with the play.
The Ducks tied the game with only 48 seconds remaining in regulation. On the power play and with Giguere on the bench for an extra attacker, Scott Niedermayer wristed a shot from the inside edge of the left circle off of the stick of defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom and over Hasek's shoulder.
It was the lone power play goal of the game. Anaheim had five chances with the extra skater while the Red Wings had seven.
Anaheim outshot Detroit 8-3 in the overtime period but the Red Wings totalled 37 shots to the Ducks' 26.
Game six of the series will be on Tuesday from the Honda Center in Anaheim. If the Red Wings win, game seven will be on Thursday from Detroit's Joe Louis Arena.
Stats I'm almost afraid to mention as we approach Game Five with a tied series...
Detroit is unbeaten in Game Fives this playoff season. In both previous rounds they came home with a tied series won the next two games to finish things off.
The Wings are unbeaten in the playoffs in afternoon games. Games Two and Five against Calgary and Games Two and Five against San Jose were all wins.
He also claims he didn't watch Game Four but that there were awful calls. Way to contradict yourself, dumbass. I expect the refs to be watching him closely today.
Guess I was wrong about the refs watching Pronger closely.
Different game than we've seen thus far this series, closer-played. I'm nervous as long as the Wings don't have the lead.
Woohoo!!!
You could see that one coming a mile away. What a move by Cleary to delay and let Lilja catch up.
That's what DETROIT needed -- a role player -- to finally be rewarded. There are others too, and hopefully, they'll hit pay-dirt as well. DANNY MARKOV is due! Go WINGS! ![]()

Johan Franzen is another guy that's due. I'm very happy at the physical play by the WINGS. Keep goin to the net. Eventually, the FROGGY Frenchman Giguere is going to fold.
OK, I don't think anyone KNOWS more than the WINGS how badly they need to get the rubber past GIGUERE on these PP opportunities. LETS SEE IT!

ANAHEIM's blocked shots are King ........ not enough action in front of GIGUERE. GO WINGS!
Wasted power play chances. That's what killed the Wings in Game Four. We'll see what happens.
THIRD PERIOD HEROICS ![]()
Which WING will step up to a higher level and score to take ANAHEIM out of this game? Does anyone out there see ANHAEIM sitting back and letting the WINGS take it to them?
I agree, I don't see much fight in the Ducks at all. Only when they are shorthanded.
The wings should win this game hands down. Giguere is playing well though.

Wow! This IS STANLEY CUP hockey at its best ..... If there is still anyone out there who doesn't agree that the Stanley Cup is the hardest championship to win, I don't know what wil. Both teams playing with SPIRIT & DETERMINATION. Its too close to call in my opinion. Both GOALIES are commendable, but so is the fore-checking and back-checking of both teams, particularly the WINGS.
WOW! What a HIT by DANNY MARKOV! That's almost worth a GOAL right there! That will help to DE-STABILIZE THE DUCKS ....... A couple more like that won't hurt .... ![]()
Did anyone see the CROSS CHECK on FILPULA just to the right of GIGUERE, just before the shot that hit the POST? That was a non-call and must be addressed!
Two-Minute Drill -3rd Period:
Holmstrom called for INTERFERENCE ........... Does anyone have a problem with this?
I said to catmandu before everything went crazy, "Remember the uncalled too many men penalty."
No one can feel any worse right now than the WINGS in the dressing room. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm pretty disgusted with the calls and non-calls ....... Like I said in a previous post .... its past being rediculous.

Who's Catmandu?
I'm glad Hull has confidence in the Wings, I'm really not feeling well right now.
Send Osgood out to club Giggy
Who's Catmandu?
Sudden Death OT ........ does it get any better than this? Yeehaaaahh ![]()
One f*cking bad break.
Bad Break is right. What it comes down to now, is what happens in the WING's dressing room. What happened on the ice is done .......... That can't be changed. No dwelling on it. The WINGs have to find a way to WIN the next two.
i cant believe that they lost . who was playing on defense, bad giveaway
It was LILJA , but no one should pile on him.
Yea if it was one person who would give it away it would be Lilja but he has really stepped it up in the playoffs. We were running what three lines in ot? Where was Bertuzzi? OBviously babcock doesnt have faith in bertuzzi and kopecky unless they were injured. Game 6 will be a good game I hope, Wings can't be blown out. Wings did come back against the Avs in '02 I believe when they were down 3-2 heading to Colorado.
It was a serious bone headed mistake. Who carries the puck from behind the net out in front of it?
Besides the last game Selanne has been almost non-existant. Looks like he's wakin up. I'm gonna credit Giggy for keeping them in the game
because it really should have been about 4-1 DET.

Well now it's do or die, not that our back has not been against the wall before. We have proven we can win in the Honda Center and 5-0 at that. I think it's time for the Captain to make a guest appearance in the locker room, not saying Nick is a bad guy but I think Stevie could put things in perspective for them

Yea WHAT HAPPENED to that 5-0 win, seemed to not carry over at all, they should look at the tape from that game and really focus on the ducks weaknesses they exploited that game. Or else its onto the pistons and tigers, Detroit is lucky to have two other teams to watch in that regard.
Everyone is blaming Lebda for turning over the puck but with 2 Ducks forchecking where the hell was Lebda's defensive partner? With Lebda being harrasses by McDonald behind the net and Selani out front where the hell were the 2 forwards and centerman? Lebda is a 25 year old and rated as the 7th defenseman in essense almost a rookie and yet his teammates allowed him to carry a puck out of his own zone against 2 superstars without any help----its a disgrace no one who was on the ice is taking any of the blame for not staying in the zone with lebda or coming back to help cover the 2 forechecking Ducks. Detroit deserves to lose the series if they don't have the guts to take responsibility for their mistakes and leave it a rookie to take all the blame
Dude.. its a no no to carry the puck from behind the net in front of it. It's always up the boards. mental mistake on his behalf and I'm sure he regrets it. Lesson learned as well because you'll never see him do it again.

Stormo's right, it was Lilja, not Lebda. I don't actually remember Lebda being on the ice in the OT, but the shift chart says he was out quite a bit so I guess he just didn't do anything to stick in my mind.

On the DETROIT penalty for interference that put ANAHEIM on the power play with less than two minutes left in the game and led to their scoring to tie the game, I said it was HOMER who was called. I believe that was incorrect. It was DATSYK.
Did anyone see BRETT HULL's recent comments about ANAHEIM's play in Game 5?
Hull's comments on Anaheim's play were ridiculous. I was laughing so hard at some of his comments: "Detroit's gonna win this game because they deserve it." How do you deserve a game? In either case, they're going to have a big hill to get over if the Wings want a Game 7. Anaheim has the mentality becuase two of the series wins are in Detroit, a traditonally difficult place to get a win in any series...and they are playing in Honda Center. If the series goes to game 7, you can guarantee it will be ugly. If not, then the Wings are done.

Let's see if the RED WINGS will answer the call tonight and force a game 7 ...........
As for BRETT, he's never been one to sugar coat anything, but I didn't think his comments were out of line. The RED WINGS outplayed, and out-hit the DUCKS. But unfortunately, the game of hockey doesn't always reward the better team.
