Power Plays Help Flames Even Series with Red Wings

The Calgary Flames capitalized on two long five-on-threes Thursday night, scoring twice on the power play en route to a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings to even their Western Conference Quarterfinal series at two games apiece.

Daymond Langkow put the Flames on the board with his first goal of the night at 8:29 of the first period. With the Flames skating with a two-man advantage, Alex Tanguay threw the puck out from behind the net to Langkow, who banged it past Detroit netminder Dominik Hasek as the first penalty expired.

Todd Bertuzzi scored his first playoff goal as a Red Wing just 2:38 later. New linemate Robert Lang put the puck out front from behind the net and Bertuzzi took it on his backhand, shifted to the forehand, then roofed a shot over goalie Miikka Kiprusoff.

A blast from the top of the left circle by Craig Conroy deflected off defenseman Brett Lebda and past Hasek with 6:27 remaining in the period to put the Flames up by a goal but the Red Wings would even things up.

Bertuzzi carried into the Calgary zone and sent it across to Johan Franzen for a wrister from the left side of the slot past Kiprusoff with 4:23 remaining.

With the game tied at two after 20 minutes, Langkow's second of the night would put the Flames out front for good.

In a play almost identical to his first goal, Tanguay sent the puck from behind the net out front to Langkow for a one-timer past Hasek. Scored at 8:19, the goal came with two Red Wings in the penalty box.

Detroit was unable to even things back up and the Flames held on to get the victory.

The Calgary goals came on two of their six power play attempts, which included two long five-on-three chances. Detroit also had six power plays but no two-man advantages.

Kiprusoff stopped 33 of the 35 shots he faced on the night. Hasek stopped 18 of 21.

The Calgary win forces a game six in the series, to be played in Calgary on Sunday night. Game five will be in Detroit on Saturday afternoon.

Opening this thread up a day early 'cause the Wings won the last couple times I did that. Time to break out all the superstitions to help make sure the Flames don't even things up. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

The buzz for this game seems to be about whether or not Bertuzzi will get bumped up to the second line with Robert Lang and Kyle Calder. GorillaCrouch has a bit on that, as does the News.

If I'm Babcock, I take Samuelsson out, bump up Bertuzzi, and put Hudler back in. Sorry catmandu, I know Sammy's your favorite, but he hasn't been getting it done.

Go Wings! bring it back to the Joe up 3-1,

I agree . . . and if I've offended anyone by complaining about LANG, cuz he's a favorite <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="mad.gif" /> . . . sorry . . . but, I gotta say it like it is.

Ansar Khan blogs that Bertuzzi and Franzen will be paired with Lang while Sammy and Calder drop down to the fourth line with Fil.

Random stat: The last time the Red Wings took a 3-1 lead in a series was the 2002 Stanley Cup Finals, when they beat the Hurricanes 3-0 in Carolina in Game Four.

The last time they lost to leave a series tied at two was in 2004 against Nashville, when the Predators blanked Detroit 3-0 to come back from being two games down. The Red Wings would go on to win that series, 4-2.

Wings seem to have more jump but still can't score on the power play.

Anyone surprised that Robert Lang had a giveaway on his first shift?

GODDAMNIT DOM! They're not gonna call interference on you!

Babcock should put Osgood in. Hasek's too busy acting, not playing goal.

Nevermind, we get another reply that shows just as much contact was made there as was when Calder hit Kipper on Tuesday. Way to be consistant, refs. What was different between the two hits? The color of the jerseys.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/19/2007 at 9:52 PM

Bert with the huge goal! Wouldn't you know it, Lang with the nice pass to get it out front.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/19/2007 at 10:04 PM

Detroit should be ridiculously happy to be tied right now. The line juggling seems to be working so far.

Kipper seemed human on the Franzen goal, Wings need to get shots on net.

Quick! The Flames are on their heels! Give them another long five-on-three!

f*cking christ.

It's absolutely sickening that in an age where I can go back to video and point out two awful calls that directly led to Calgary goals, biased officiating still happens. Yeah, I said biased. Is there any other explanation? Where are the marginal calls on Calgary? You'd think if it was just bad calls, they'd go both ways, but the Flames have had two undeserved long five-on-threes and the Wings have had none.

It's always seen as making excuses if you blame the refs but this game is not supposed to be such that you have to beat both the other team and the refs.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/19/2007 at 10:57 PM

This sucks, the game is being controlled by the refs for the Canadien audience. I have seen so many illegal plays by the Flames, not to mention the Offside calls that are being ignored!

I like the big guy getting p*ssed now! Bertuzzi should whip some asses tonight.

I'll just sum it up by saying this. Calgary is beating the Detroit Red Wings. They are winning the scrums. They are putting more people in front of Hasek. The Wings on the other hand are NOT putting people in front Kiprusoff. How many times has Schneider and Lidstrom fired the puck in, and there were no Wing in front of Kiprusoff. Shall I mention the POWER PLAY ... The Wings have had NONE. The Wings power play, which has been sick for weeks now, is/has been a huge problem. If the WINGS lose the series, it will be the REASON why they do. Making their PP an even bigger problem is Calgary's PK AND their PP. NAH.... bitch all you want about the REFS ... Its the WINGS allowing Calgary to beat them. I don't care how much BABCOCK jockeys the lines .... if the WINGS aren't up to taking back the series, its over with.

Posted by skyguy52 on 4/19/2007 at 11:28 PM

Babcock just bitched about the refs more than I've ever seen him do. Wow.

He said something I was going to mention but was too p*ssed off to, the Wings really did control the play pretty well in the second period when they weren't killing off ridiculous penalties. I added the second part, he didn't call them ridiculous, but that would have been cool.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/19/2007 at 11:28 PM

OK ... WINGS 0 for 5, Calgary 2 for 5 .... The Wings just p*ssed another PP away. Couldn't get anything generated. Lost a key face-off in Flame end ..... I rest my case ....

Well, yeah the Wings need to do this and do that, but how is it possible for the emotion of a team to move forward when you aren't getting a square shake. It's like you at work, if someone is p*ssing you off and continues to get favor over you, how well do you concentrate about your job?Nah, your summation is blanketed with remorse of a wanna go against the grain average joe bag of donuts!Go Wings, and we'll win this sucker tonight!

Alright, Detroit power play, lets see if they get a cheap call to make it a 5-on-3.

Of course that's too much to expect.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/19/2007 at 11:54 PM

I have to agree with Mickey .... He's said it 3-4 times tonight, in reference to the WINGS Power Play ... "No WINGS in front of the net" ..... "Its hard to score from the point, when there are NO wings in front of the net to put pressure on Kiprusoff." I rest my case again.

Posted by skyguy52 on 4/19/2007 at 11:59 PM

Dude, where have you been? I commented on that after the second game...go look. We were weak then, and nothing has changed, but the Wings need to get better 5 on 5 ref calls. Come on, I like that you want the Wings to play tougher, sh*t, so do I, but where is the even calls from the League. It makes me feel like I'm getting ripped off for such a good year!! Damn it!!

What a motherf*cking surprise, the refs have three periods to make up for it and the Flame were just so f*cking "disciplined" that they didn't even take the weakest penalties for a Detroit 5-on-3.

Mickey just ripped on the refs, way to go Mick.

And Robert Lang loses the puck twice with about a minute left and Detroit trying to get Hasek on the bench. Way to go, Bobby.

Calgary's winning record at home: Hookers in the refs' Saddledome dressing room?

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/20/2007 at 12:11 AM

Mickey summed it up tonight, The REFS and the WINGS PP .... well, its back to the Motor City .... This one's going 6, but for the WINGS to do it, they Gotta put their "A" game on for the next two. Otherwise we're goin' 7. I don't want to think about it.

GO WINGS. YOU are a better team than Calgary. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

Yep I had my eye on Lang a little bit tonight too. He really did give up the puck again a couple of times at key times, that led to turn-overs. Very unfortunate. I really don't understand why its happening, but it is. That, Can't happen too many more times. I hope somebody is looking at the game films.

I agree with you on the cheap calls by the REFS. No doubt about it. Mickey, and you gotta respect him, said it many times tonight, in the commentary. The REFS are f*ckIN the game up with their B.S. Calls. But, looking at it the other way, which is focused more on what the WINGS Can do better, THAT still needs to be addressed. I'm saying that their are things the WINGS can and should be doing better, that they are NOT. I'm not the coach, but I watch the game, and I see things that stand out. I've been saying it like it is now on this forum, all series long. I call it like it is, AND I don't think I'm being unfair or inaccurate. I'm just another fan in the crowd though. I wish I could pick up the phone and call BABS or HOLLAND .... <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="mad.gif" /> I need a good job how about you?!?!

I couldn't agree anymore that the refs weren't the best, but the fact is, the Red Wings really need to pick up their play, starting with the powerplay. They are starting to respect Kipprusoff too much and they keep looking for the perfect shot. The play of Lang really needs to improve as well as Samuelsson's. Lastly, someone on Detriot needs to change the momentum in the opening period of saturday's game. Personally, I would like to see Bertuzzi, concussed or not, drop the gloves with Iginla and show the fag how to fight with someone his own size, break his neck for all i care. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

It's getting ridiculous... You can point to bad calls by the refs in both games. All of which resulted in goals. This doesn't excuse the fact that the Flames have found their game and are now outplaying detroit. We HAVE to win at home in game 5 or it is over.

DO or DIE.... I never saw this coming.

Agreed. One thing the Wings have to do is create a lot more traffic in front of Kiprusoff. That puts pressure on him. Too many times in the last game, I saw WINGS just standing in front of the net, easily covered by the FLAME D. The Wings are taking lots of shot at the net, but they are low probability shots, many of which are not even getting through to Kiprusoff. If he sees them, I don't care where the Wings are shooting from, he's going to stop it. He's much too good a goalie not to stop one-timers like that. Another problem is, the WINGS are not getting rebounds. The are not getting second and third shots. Calgary is easily getting them & clearing them, and simply moving the puck out of their zone. The Wings MUST CREATE more chances. They must win the scrums and create chances for ugly goals. LANG & SAMUELSON do need to pick up their play, especially LANG. He did assist on a goal last night, so I have to give him credit, where its due, But he has his stick lifted more often than not, & he's moved off the puck easily. He's also lost face-offs at critical times. I hate picking on him, because I really do like him as a person, but he's not getting it done. The WINGS power play is non-existent, while the FLAMES is very effective. The WINGS have the better team, are deeper. They just have to execute basic, hard nosed hockey. G O W I N G S ! ! ! ! !
