Flames Get Back in Series with 3-2 Win over Red Wings

The Calgary Flames rode their power play to a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings Tuesday night, preventing Detroit from taking a commanding lead in their Western Conference Quarterfinal series that is now set at 2-1 in favor of the Red Wings.

The Flames had six attempts with the extra attacker and scored on two of them, including their first two goals.

For the first time in the series, Calgary opened the scoring. At 9:20 of the second period, Alex Tanguay sent a pass from the bottom of the left circle to Matthew Lombardi crashing the net for a deflection past goaltender Dominik Hasek just before knocking the net off it's moorings. It was the first of the Flames' power play goals.

The Red Wings responded 2:10 later. Dan Cleary threw the puck on net from the bottom of the right circle and it bounced back out to the top of the crease, where Kris Draper was waiting to whack in the rebound, under a sprawling Miikka Kiprusoff.

Draper would tally another goal just 39 seconds into the third period to give the Red Wings a lead. Dan Cleary rocked Calgary defenseman Dion Phaneuf with a hit in the left corner. Cleary recovered to pick up the puck and throw it at the net and Draper put the rebound in.

The hit left Phaneuf woozy but he returned to the game.

Mark Giordano wristed a shot from the top of the right circle past Hasek on a Flames' power play at 4:43 of the period to tie things back up.

Calgary captain Jarome Iginla, who had been held to only two shots in the two games in Detroit, put the Flames back in front. A pass from Wayne Primeau bounced over the stick of defender Nicklas Lidstrom and got to Iginla, who blasted a shot from the top of the right circle past Hasek at 9:21.

With Hasek on the bench for the extra attacker in the final minute, the Red Wings were unable to even things up.

Hasek finished the night with 25 saves on 28 shots. Kiprusoff stopped 28 of the 30 shots he faced.

Detroit did not score on any of their four power play chances.

The Calgary win means that the series will return to Detroit for a game five on Saturday afternoon. Game four will be in Calgary on Thursday night.

Notes: Todd Bertuzzi returned to the Detroit lineup after missing the first two games. Jiri Hudler was left out of the lineup to make room for Bertuzzi.

It's worked for every other game so far, so I'll start the Game Three thread off with a mention of Todd Bertuzzi. He's a game-time decision this time around. I still think he's ready to go but Babcock is worried about screwing with a lineup that's been working.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/17/2007 at 2:26 PM

this is a tough decision for Babcock, sure Bertuzzi adds grit but he will step in cold due to injury, the current line is hot (excluding Lang). Maybe try it out and if it doesnt work then add him to the 3rd line with Draper and Maltby (one killer grind line).

Posted by choyer on 4/17/2007 at 8:26 PM

Bertuzzi is in, Hudler is out.

After a couple minutes... Flames are playing stronger than they did in the first two games. I'd love to see them get worn down quick but that home crowd has to be energizing.

Well, Midway 1st period. WINGS managed to p*ss away over 6 full minutes of power play time, with at least one possible short handed goal by CONROY .... I'm not impressed yet.

Posted by skyguy52 on 4/17/2007 at 10:33 PM

Absolutely not impressed by the Wings yet.

Hope Rhett Warriner is okay, though. Didn't look as bad as the last time a player took a puck to the eye in a playoff series between these two teams.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/17/2007 at 10:43 PM

Guess that puck was to the nose, not eye. Good deal.

Not a great period for the Wings but, like Mickey's saying, they survived and that was pretty good.

Gah! Draper still can't finish!

HOW in the hell does DRAPER "MISS" the net on a shot from 10 feet out????? He couldn't hit the broad side of a barn .... <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/tongue.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.png" />

Remember how I said back in December that I was going to pitch a fit every time a Wings opponent scored while in the Detroit crease? Yeah, I love variable rulebooks.

The problem I had with the Calgary goal was how they managed to RUSH thru the WING D ... When are the WINGS going try that tactic???? I see guys like CALDER, SAMUELSON, even Big ROBERT LANG being "pushed" off the puck, or in the case of LANG, Simply giving the puck away.

Well .... every time I start bitching about the WINGS, they manage to come back within minutes to scores. KUDOS to DRAPER ... he managed to REDEEM himself somewhat ... after MISSING the, AGAIN, with a wide open, no obstruction, shot from 10 feet out ...

Well after that last gaff by the WINGS, who made a DUMB line change, giving the FLAMES a 2 on 1, ALMOST a clear break - away - THANK GOD THEY DIDN'T SCORE --- I'm ready to turn the frickin TV OFF ... I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE -- I'll Go to the Fricken RADIO ! <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.png" /> <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.png" />

Hey YZERFAN ... what are trying to do? NOT JINX the WINGS by CHANGING the dates of their games this series to 4 for APRIL as opposed to 3 for MARCH ...lol .... Yeah right, don't change things now ... <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/tongue.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.png" />

HA! I hadn't noticed the date problems. I'm not changing anything until after this game, if they win, I'm considering it a good luck charm and keeping up with it. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/tongue.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.png" />

Much better overall period. Unfortunately, it was better for Calgary too. Anyone else feel like it took about forever?

Lets see if Cheli can put a shot like that on net next time. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/tongue.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.png" />

Right, maybe my expectations are a bit too high. After all they are playing on the Road in the Saddle-Dome, but that said, the WINGS really haven't had many opportunities after 40 minutes of play ... NOT sure what to "blame" it on yet, except to say, I would like to see them RUSH the net more on the attack thru the neutral zone, into the FLAME zone.

Holy sh*t! That was huge!

That's going on the site. Cleary came up real big there, Draper continues to make up for not being able to finish earlier.

NOW THAT HIT BY CLEARY IS WHAT I LOVE TO SEE --- GREAT HIT! looooooooovvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeeeeeee IT~!!!! <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/tongue.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.png" />

Flames even it up on about the weakest interference call there could be.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/18/2007 at 12:18 AM

Keep in mind, following the interference calls on Schneider and Markov, that the Wings haven't had a power play since the end of that 4:00 chance in the first period.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/18/2007 at 12:22 AM

f*cking christ, someone tell me how what the Flames have been doing is any less interference than Schneider and Markov?

McCleary is out of his mind .. has been all night .... Bad break for LIDSTROM on the play with IGINLA ... Would be nice to see the WINGS Rally and get that one back ..! <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.png" />

I'd love to hear Babcock's thoughts right now. Kipper is a f*cking joke, throwing his head back and going down like that. Hasek did the same damn thing in the last regular season game in Calgary and no one gave him the benefit of the doubt.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/18/2007 at 12:33 AM

I'll be damned, they remembered that Calgary doesn't always follow the rules.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/18/2007 at 12:35 AM

Filpula has been impressive tonight on more that a couple of occasions he's attacked the FLAME net. I want to see more of that from a couple more WINGS .... Calder has NOT had a good night. Not sure what his problem is tonight, but he's not played well. And LANG .... WTF !!!! Where the HELL has HE been? .............?!?!?!?!

Posted by skyguy52 on 4/18/2007 at 12:41 AM

WTF ?!?!? BENCH LANG ... HE JUST HAD HIS STICK LIFTED AGAIN .... ON WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A GOOD SCORING OPPORTUNITY .....

And then to top it off, LANG replaces DRAPER on the Face-off, with 15 seconds remaining, AND LOSES the FACE-OFF !!!!!I say BENCH LANG ... I've had it with the under-performing f*ck!I'd Like to know if anyone else agrees with me on LANG's play??? <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

Goddamnit. Wasted opportunity. Had the lead in the third and all those Calgary power plays just killed them.

And I totally say bench Lang. Hell, I should have said that before the end of the game since he responds every time I bitch about him. I'll have to remember to do that in Game Four.

I really didn't want to have hockey to watch on Saturday.

HAHA .. I know what you are referring to ... I've been bitching about LANG's since before the play-offs started, but it seemed , like every time I brought up his UNDERPERFORMING name in TEXT, he somehow scored a goal, or assisted on one ... so WTF?!?!?! ... .tonight though, no excuses, he was p*ss-poor, I watched his play closely and he clearly SUCKED ... I hope someone from the WINGS coaching looks at the film and has a chat with him ... NO EXCUSE FOR UNDERPERFORMANCE DURING THE PLAY-OFFS. EITHER PERFORM OR SIT ... LANG'S CHOICE! <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

The only thing I liked about the game was Cleary's hit. Its about time someone shut up phaneuf, now if someone would just do it to iginla. Honestly, horrible game. The ice in calgary is always awful, even during the regular season, just watch how much the puck jumps, pathetic. The refs need to be more consistant with their calls. Zetterberg was clearly interfered with skating back on iginlas goal. schneider needs to stop taking stupid penalties. Lang needs some intensity. Lastly, Detriot needs to broadcast games on Versus. I looked forward to the playoffs so I wouldnt have to watch FSN and listen to ken daniels say the same things over and over again and jynx the wings. glad i got that out of me

Posted by foster016 on 4/18/2007 at 10:59 AM

Funny that you say you'd rather have the Versus guys, every time we get them I always wonder what Mickey's thinking. I don't have much use for Ken (I don't dislike him either, he's better than a lot of the play-by-play guys, I just want him to leave the color to Redmond) but, being someone who doesn't like the officials, I like hearing someone who has the tendency to agree.

The Versus guys will almost never question a call, because we all know the NHL is great and infallible and by extension the refs are as well. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/default/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

Hey guys its bound to happen, its hard to sweep a team, dont worry about it. As long as we split it at the Saddledome, we can finish it in Hockeytown which would be much nicer. I still believe the wings are gonna hold on.

Posted by choyer on 4/18/2007 at 3:14 PM

Oh, yeah, the Wings are still in control, its just disappointing to see a blown opportunity. You don't get to blow a lot of chances in the playoffs.

With regard to ROBERT LANG ....... he's big forward, and I think, capable of much more than he's been giving. It's NOT just a enough for him to play with more INTENSITY, which for sure he does. He needs to play BETTER. At his current level of performance, he is a LIABILITY to the RED WINGS. He has his stick lifted frequently. He is pushed off the puck frequently. He loses in one-on-one scrums for the puck. He loses face-offs at critical times. He is NOT contributing at the level he is capable of. BENCH HIM! NOW! And bring back someone to replace him from Grand Rapids!

I'm a little more concerned about the LOSS in Calgary. I will be very disappointed if the series is evened up tomorrow by the FLAMES. This will be a MAJOR problem for the Wings if it happens. The momentum clearly goes to Calgary, and unlike others I've heard from on this Forum, Calgary is a dangerous team. The WINGS have to put this one away quickly, and efficiently or face elimination themselves. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

For those that missed it, the video of Cleary's hit on Phaneuf and the ensuing Draper goal is now posted...

http://www.detroitho...imedia/983p.php

The more I look at it, the easier it is to see that Cleary jumped. Probably should have been a penalty called.
