Red Wings Hold Off Blues' Repeated Comebacks

The Detroit Red Wings took the lead four different times Friday night but the St. Louis Blues were only able to even things up three times, as Detroit picked up a 5-3 victory over the visiting Blues.

Kris Draper's shorthanded goal with 6:29 remaining in the third period was the first Detroit score to go unanswered by St. Louis. On a two-on-one with Draper, Nicklas Lidstrom fired a shot that was partially stopped by goalie Manny Legace and Lee Stempniak, bouncing the puck into the air. Draper batted it into the net to give the Red Wings a 4-3 lead.

Dan Cleary would later add an empty net goal.

Henrik Zetterberg gave the Red Wings their first lead just 33 seconds into the game, skating through the left circle and cutting across the top of the crease before putting the puck past Legace.

Stempniak replied for St. Louis just 33 seconds later, wristing a shot from the right circle over the shoulder of Detroit netminder Dominik Hasek.

With Ryan Johnson in the penalty box for running Hasek, Tomas Holmstrom put Detroit back in front at 8:29 of the second, deflecting a blast by Lidstrom from the top of the left circle.

The Blues rallied once again when Johnson scored a shorthanded goal with 5:16 remaining in the second. Johnson took a pass from Dallas Drake to break in alone on Hasek, who came out of the crease to take away the puck. Johnson slipped a well-timed shot under him to put the game at 2-2.

Holmstrom's second of the night gave the Wings another lead at 7:42 of the third. A series of quick passes from Lidstrom and Henrik Zetterberg put Holmstrom in on Legace and a quick one-handed move flipped the puck over the St. Louis goaltender and into the net.

Keith Tkachuk accounted for the Blues' final comeback, deflecting a Dennis Wideman shot out of the air with what was determined not to be a high stick just 2:14 after Holmstrom's goal.

Hasek finished the night with 24 saves on 27 shots against, while Legace stopped the same number of chances on 28 shots.

Detroit scored on one of their five power plays and St. Louis was held without a goal while skating with the extra attacker. Each team scored once while shorthanded.

The Red Wings' next game will be Monday night in New York when they visit the Original Six rival Rangers.

The resurgant Blues visit the Joe and I'm going to miss it, helping my parents move into their new house. I've got the DVR set but that's never the same.

Nashville lost last night so the Wings can pull to within 3 points with a win tonight, using up their game in hand.

I ended up making it back in time to catch all but the first five minutes of the first. Had been planning on going to my soccer game in the third period tonight but screw that, my back is killing me. Unfortunately, my DVR decided not to record anything, so I missed those early goals.

Refs have been surprisingly quiet and (unsurprisingly) the game's had good flow. Neither team seems to be playing all that well.

Holy sh*t, Ryan Johnson didn't even try to hide that goalie interference. And Andy Murray has the balls to try and argue it.

Johnson's lucky the Wings are pretty spineless, he should have been beat to hell. Will there be a response from the Wings later?

Apparently there'll be one on the scoreboard now. Good enough for me.

Yzer, I don't really plan on hanging around a whole lot probably, and certainly not stirring up trouble. But you're gonna tell me the refs got that right? You have a right to a lane to the goal. Johnson took the puck in and got a shot. Waiving the rebound goal off was weak. Calling the penalty was absolute crap. And letting the Wings get away with murdering Johnson in the corner was beyond unbelievable.Unbelievable.What a ridiculous unfair swing of events. When is the NHL gonna make this crap stop?

About 14 minutes into the 2nd -- Its been a pretty open game so far, a lot of good, fast, skating and passing by both teams. I think the Wings have the edge so far in play, though the score only reflects 2-1 Wings. Hope the Wings can keep up the pace in the third. How about the Dominator getting rolled over !! You don't see that too much anymore.

Skaters are supposed to make every possible effort to avoid the goalie. Johnson made none. None at all. And if that's because of the tap on the skate he got making him lose control, he's not a good enough skater to be in the NHL.

oops -- a mini-meltdown with good pressure by the Blues Near end of 2nd

Johnson's a fantastic skater, so that's not it. Johnson still had the puck till he was in the crease. There was literally no where for him to go. He tried to go up and that didn't work.

Except for the fact that he didn't have it in the crease, he took the shot at the edge of the faceoff circle and continued on to the net, making no effort to avoid Hasek.

I've got this going on YouTube right now for easy review.

Right there, Backes bangs away at the puck in the crease but shifts around Hasek before going over him. Johnson didn't make that move to go around.

Wow, great pass by Zetterberg to Holmstrom and a nifty move by Homer.

The play on STL net by Chilios / Cleary et al is one of the better net rushes I've seen by the Wings. I would like to see more of that. What made it even better was Chilios leading the way! Markov and Kronwell are doing it well too. Go WINGS!!!!!

Posted by skyguy52 on 2/2/2007 at 9:40 PM

Heh, so was Cleary's call goalie interference?

Here's the video of Johnson:

And the Wings get a shorthanded goal of their own!

A great heads-up final pass by Hank to Cleary on the right wing for the empty netter insurance goal!!!!! Lots of pressure by STL in the final minutes, but the Wings held up well to it. AND it was good to see the WINGS stay offensive minded in the last few minutes and not collapse into defense mode.

I never saw what Cleary did to be honest.

Congrats on the win.

I'm p*ssed. But just overall. Refs sucked, hurt us some. But when you have like 5 PPs including a 5-3 and can't score, don't go blaming games on the refs.

To come so close to being right by that 8th spot and then p*ssing points away in three straight games is awfully frustrating.

Also, watch Johnson's head. He never sees Hasek until it's too late.

He had no time to get out of the way. His only other option might have been to slam himself into the metal post.

I agree with what Mickey just said, one of the more entertaining games this season.

And STL, we disagree on that penalty but you're welcome to talk hockey around here whenever you want.

Really?I thought it was one of the sloppier games all year. Both teams kept fumbling the puck. Two shorthanded goals not from great PKing but from PP turnovers. Both teams getting ticked at eachother, but the refs not letting them have any fights (or maybe the Wings wouldn't fight--not poking fun, but I believe the Wings just in general are considered to not have a real tough guy). Inconsistant reffing.Surely it doesn't help that I lost, but I found it to be a pretty hard game to watch.

I might take you up on that, but generally I have trouble checking more than a few message boards on a regular basis. But if nothing else, I'll certainly come by for Blues-Wings threads.

I think it was that it was a close game the whole time. I didn't say it was the best game (neither did Mickey, IIRC), just that it was entertaining.

That's fair.I suppose I might think that had it ended the other way.Perhaps it's a negative trait, but I just about never find games exciting if it's not a win. Probably lie to myself, but eh. Ya know...Actually, earlier in the year I might have found this more exciting. But now that the Blues have proven capable, I can't settle for just being close anymore.

Yeah, the YouTube thing is that I realized later that I already had an account so I deleted the account that I posted that clip with, which pulled down the clip, too. I never use YouTube since I usually just host videos here, but that one didn't warrant it so I wanted to use someone else's bandwidth.
