Red Wings Enter All-Star Break with Loss to Avalanche

In their last game before the All-Star break and their second in as many nights, the Detroit Red Wings couldn't hold off the Colorado Avalanche, allowing a late go-ahead goal and falling 3-1.

The teams were tied at a goal apiece when Andrew Brunette gave the Avalanche their second lead of the night at 9:52 of the third period, just seconds after the expiration of a penalty to Andreas Lilja. With Detroit attempting to clear the puck from their crease, Brunette crashed in and knocked it into the net.

The Red Wings were never able to even things back up, and Joe Sakic added an empty net goal with 42 seconds remaining.

Ian Laperriere had given the Avalanche their first lead of the night at 9:45 of the first period, putting a backhander past goaltender Joey MacDonald off the rebound from a tremendous save.

Detroit evened things up 5:40 later when Valtteri Filppula slipped a shot from the left circle past Colorado goalie Peter Budaj.

Neither team scored a power play goal, with Detroit having three chances with the extra attacker and Colorado having five, including the final three of the game.

Budaj stopped 27 of 28 shots against in the win, while MacDonald - starting in place of the sick Chris Osgood - made 28 saves on 30 shots.

After the All-Star Game, the Red Wings will be back in action next Friday when they visit the St. Louis Blues.

A shame to see that huge save by MacDonald wasted when the Avs put in the rebound. Another goal scored with the opponent squarely in the crease. If the Wings ever have another goal called back for that, the organization needs to pitch one hell of a fit.

Huge goal by Val Filppula! Way to out-wait Budaj!Going back to the first goal (and the first one in Columbus last nite)... I looked up the AP article from the Detroit - San Jose game on 12/2 where the Wings had an apparent goal called back. The description is as follows:

An apparent goal by Schneider with 3:13 left in the opening period was waved off because Red Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom was ruled to be in the crease. Replays showed that Holmstrom's skates were outside the painted area.

Seems to imply that it was waved off not because he was interferring with the goalie but because they thought he was in the crease. Nice to see that only matters for guys wearing the Winged Wheel.Heh, I went back and found the game thread for that San Jose game and found the following from me...

I'm going to be reviewing every goal against the Wings for the rest of the season and if there's anyone even near the crease, I'll be pitching a fit.

I didn't think I'd actually be doing it. <img src="http://forums.detroithockey.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="B)" border="0" alt="cool.png" />

Well, Brunette was in the crease for Colorado's second goal but at least he followed the puck in. Where's a quick whistle when you need one?

I'm angry about this loss but I can't really say for what reason, other than that it was a loss.

MacDonald played a solid game, the rest of the team didn't suck, it just didn't work out. Maybe that's why it's so maddening, you should win games where you don't suck.

I agree. The Wings played well in the 1st period, but I thought they looked tired in the 3rd. Hejduk looked awesome for the Avs. MacDonald played well, which is great to see. Too bad about Kronwell. I hope he heals fast

From the sound of things, Kronwall will be fine. I'm kind of surprised he left the arena to get stitched up if it was "just" a cut. I guess it was deep enough that the team doctors weren't equipped to take care of it.
