ST. LOUIS, Missouri -- On the night that the St. Louis Blues retired the number of former captain Brett Hull, the Detroit Red Wings spoiled the show, jumping out to an early lead and picking up a 5-1 victory in the first game of a home-and-home series.
After a long ceremony to honor the former Blue and Red Wing, the teams took to the ice with Detroit clearly dominating.
Just 2:34 in, Henrik Zetterberg scored a power play goal to put the Red Wings on the board. Taking a cross-crease pass from Pavel Datsyuk, he lifted a shot into the far side of the net before goaltender Manny Legace could get to it.
Less than two minutes later, Datsyuk got a goal of his own, putting a wrist shot from the left circle off of defenseman Bryce Salvador and into the St. Louis net at 4:22.
With 6:18 remaining in the period, the Red Wings added another when Dan Cleary threaded a shot between Legace and the post. The goal chased Legace from the crease and brought Jason Bacashihua into the game.
The Blues never recovered from Detroit's quick start and the Red Wings continued rolling, adding a goal by Valtteri Filppula in the second period and one by Robert Lang in the third.
Eric Brewer scored with 3:24 remaining in the third to break Detroit netminder Dominik Hasek's shutout.
Hasek stopped 24 of 25 shots against while Legace made only nine saves on 12 shots and Bacashihua went 18-for-20.
The Red Wings' first goal was the game's lone power play goal. Detroit had four chances with the extra attacker and St. Louis had eight.
The two teams will meet again on Thursday night when the Red Wings host the second game of the home-and-home series.
This game hould be interesting. Manny Legace VS Detroit. Hopefully, Detroit will kill St.Loius and give Legace a little bit of what he deserves!!!
I'll turn this into the official Wings-Blues home-and-home series thread.
I wouldn't say Legace deserves to get smacked down, but the Wings do need the wins. Like with McCarty, I don't wish him any ill will, but he's not one of the good guys anymore.
No in-game comments? Must have been a busy night.
Well, Legace got lit up pretty good. Good to see the Wings capitalize on how slow the Blues were to open the game. Pavs gets back on the board and the power play gets one.
With the Blues up again on Thursday, it would have been nice to keep them down in the third but St. Louis kept fighting. We'll see what happens in the back end of this. Actually, you will, I won't 'cause I'll be on a plane. Such is life.
Since McCarty was bought out in 2005, Red Wings fans have continued to cheer for him even though he's on another team. I don't do this. I don't wish anything bad upon him, but his success means Calgary's success, and I don't want any team other than the Wings to succeed. Mac and Manny and Shanny are the bad guys now.
The final score was 5-1. You can (usually, depending on whether or not I'm actually around) get that info from the main DetroitHockey.Net page or the Gameday page for that particular game (in this case, here).
Not specifically because of the money, because he's not a Red Wing anymore. How many players from other teams do you root for? Not many, I bet. He used to be a Red Wing, he's not anymore, just like all the rest of the players in the league.
I still llke a lot of people on the Buffalo team because that is my Hometown team and i have a lot of respect for the players including one of the best goalies RYAN MILLER
Sorry about the lack of comments, I was in the Captain's native province for the last few days. I agree even though they were once Wings and we all used to root for them, times have changed. They are the bad guys now. The only non wing player I will root for is Daniel Briere unless he is playing against the Wings. Then he can go to hell!
The Sabres would be absolute morons to give up Miller, but it would totally kick ass to see him as a Wing. As long as it didn't take too much to get him (since it'd probably have to be via trade).
But that'd be the end of Jimmy Howard and/or Stefan Liv in Detroit.
I dont think that the sabres will be giving him up any time soon. I just cant believe that they dont play marty biron who is a really good goalie
I can live without Liv or Howard, besides nobody ever thought the Oilers would give up the Great One and Miller is still young. Him and Ozzie would be perfect together.
By the great one are you talking about dominic hasek. You are right i think thatr chris osgood and Ryan miller would make a good pair.. Dors anybody know when ozzie is coming back
Yeah, it was a big deal in the late '80s when the Oilers, who had just won four Cups in five years, traded Gretzky to the Kings for purely financial reasons.
So he's saying that you never know what reasons the Sabres might have for giving up Miller.
But you never know when a team will do something stupid, look at what happend with the Islanders goaltending situtation
