Red Wings End Preseason with 6-2 Win over Farjestad

The Detroit Red Wings finished off their preseason exhibition schedule with a 6-2 win over the Swedish Elite League’s Farjestads BK on Wednesday. It was Detroit’s first match in Europe since 1938 and a lead-in to the NHL Premier games on Friday and Saturday.

Farjestad outshot the Red Wings early but Detroit netminder Jimmy Howard kept his team in the game.

Jason Williams opened the game’s scoring at 6:47 of the first period. Ville Leino picked off an attempted breakout pass in the neutral zone and tapped it back in to Williams who lifted a shot fron the right faceoff circle into the far corner of the net.

Henrik Zetterberg scored a similar goal with 4:52 remaining in the period and Valtteri Filppula added another from the slot with 1:25 left to put Detroit up by three after the opening frame.

Brian Rafalski scored on a chance from the blue line in the second period while Niklas Kronwall and Todd Bertuzzi added third period goals.

Antti Pihlstrom and Sanny Lindstrom scored for Farjestad.

Four of Detroit’s goals came on the power play, with only Williams and Bertuzzi scoring at even strength.

With the preseason wrapped up the Red Wings return to Stockholm where they will face the St. Louis Blues in a neutral site home-and-home series to open the 2009-10 season.


The Red Wings were involved in the NHL’s first foray into Europe, visiting Paris and London alongside the Montreal Canadiens in 1938. The two teams played nine games with the Wings going 3-5-1 in the series.
